I generally tip 20% of the grand total (including drinks, tax, etc), but that would have made my second example duplicitous

Because it’s only ever being taught one way … if in college teachers would actually learn to teach to different sets/types of learners, than all people would have a better chance at success

Is it the way it is taught that is the problem or the general discipline/persitence of those being taught?

I wouldn't write a damn thing. They already gave you the answer.

It's a much more ambitious goal than that. It's intended to make people like the OP accept this kind of stuff and conform to something that is truly illogical.

20% on the grand total is quicker to do in my head than figuring out 25% on the subtotal would have been. It's actually 20% on the grand total, rounded up to the nearest dollar, but the larger point applies

ETA: And being we are now spending so much time on my tipping practices, $3 is my minimum tip, no matter how small my tab is.

This is the stupidest thing I’ve seen in education. I feel for kids and parents having to put up with this nonsense.

Write the answer using words instead of numbers and use cursive.

Agreed. You have to have a minimum tip.

Common Core is ignorant. Why make it harder for kids to do the exact same thing? I see arguments with teachers in my future.

Right now it’s the way it’s taught - and parents aren’t familiar so they cannot help at home (if that’s even a possibility)

In the past when teachers tried different methods to reach more students, it was a discipline/persistence issue

I don't know how to do this. I can maths in my head but this doesn't really work for me.

Edit: this is common core bull shite.

WHile I have never delved into common core deeply the surface level look at it seems to be very similar to the way I have always manipulated large numbers. I remember trying to explain how I did this to my mother (who had an undergrad math degree) when I was in 3rd or 4th grade and it just sounded like gibberish to her. I spent my entire time in school doing math my way then translating it into another "proper" math language. On multiple-choice tests and tests that did not require showing my work I was extremely fast and accurate but if I had to show my work I got bogged down in the translation.

A teacher later sorta solved the riddle when they commented my mind worked like an abacus. At the time I didn't understand how an abacus worked but once I did it was clear I manipulate numbers in a fashion similar to an abacus and not unlike the value discs in the OP.

People who tip loose change at places like Waffle House should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

The way it is taught. It is trying to FORCE kids to think 1 way, and ONLY 1 way to solve a math problem, and it's requiring an unnecessary amount of steps that wastes time in solving the problem.

Anyone can answer a math problem if given 1 hour to figure it out. What makes someone "good at math" is being able to QUICKLY answer the problem correctly. Common core does none of this, and just tries to place everyone in the same neat little box and pretend everyone is exactly the same.

Adding everything up is 544, minus the crossed out numbers, 329, is 215. This makes no sense to me. But, I am an accountant, who hates math.
