The first manned mission of the Artemis program will see humans return to the moon for the first time since 1972.

My astronauts have confirmed this mission is a go.

FIFY!
What can I say? I like kicking ant piles!

As a space nerd, I've been waiting for this basically my entire life. Humans going back to the moon, that is.
This is just a tease. Artemis III is the real deal. Hopefully, it'll excite a new generation of nerds to further push the human boundaries into space.

Can we stop with this clickbait giving the impression we're returning to the surface? The tweet clearly says it's a mission to orbit AROUND the moon.

Boy they better hope it looks like whatever they made up in 1969. That would
be awkward.

wait, I thought the technology to get to the moon was lost and there was no way to get past the van halen belt?!

They're just flying to the edge of the Earth, then going under it. They're just going to film the flat bottom side and say it's the moon.

Can some nerd tell me some details
How long is the trip to the moon. How close are we getting. surely we are using this opportunity to shot a probe at the moon and gather some data. Are we expecting close up photos
It's basically test flights in stages. Make sure you can launch fine and orbit and deorbit and land in back in the ocean on target--hopefully no bugs to iron out before they go of the whole enchilada. They're not going to attempt everything on the first launch. Just like they originally did.
We first orbited the moon before we landed on it

They are launching, swinging around the moon, then splashing off SD to be picked up by a Navy ship that can't be named. That's about all I can say. Was done a few years ago with USS PORTLAND, should give you type of ship they're using. Very big deal right now on the SD waterfront and looking forward to doing this.

For those that follow manned launches closely, what percent take off on the first scheduled date? I understand weather needs to be right and that dates get pushed back. I'll be in central Florida when SpaceX Crew-12 is currently scheduled on February 15 so I'm considering taking family over to KSC for the launch but I'm unsure how to manage expectations.

I watched a shuttle launch from KSC. It’s amazing to behold
YES…. You want to go

50 years and they aren't even landing on it?
They’re not going to fly to the moon and land on it the very first mission. Same thing they did in the 60s. Apollo had two missions in moon orbit before they landed on it the 3rd time to the moon.
This is still a pretty historical event being the first time humans have left low earth orbit since 1972.
