Great use of tax payer info. I can see this info being very helpful.....chuckle, chuckle.

Scientific evidence is all just predictions based on math and theory and then observation/ experiment.

The possibility of alternate / parallel universes arise from different interpretations of quantum mechanics. Nobody knows the correct interpretations, but the various equations of quantum mechanics have made predictions which have then been verified with experiment and observation.

You just hit on one of the big distinctions that has to be made between theoretical and experimental science.

The theorists make up mathematical constructs that they think might describe the universe well. They can tell you what their math predicts and may say things like "maybe it means parallel universes!" (but probably aliens). Their work is supposed to be pie-in-the-sky and is important because they're the ones playing "what if" and trying to come up with a mathematical framework that more completely describes our universe than what we already have.

Meanwhile the experimentalists will tell you tell that unless a theorist has testable predictions, he's full of shite and all he has is a philosophy, not a theory. It's the experimentalist's job to say "hold up, swole up" and hold the theorists feet to the fire to make testable predictions that can then be tested for validity. If it isn't testable, it isn't science.

Einstein published the Special Theory of Relativity in 1905 and the General Theory of Relativity in 1915. Years passed before either of these theories was confirmed by experiment. Now, if you look at both of these theories at face value, they're fricking bonkers. Time slows down? Gravity is warped spacetime? What the frick is "spacetime"? HOLY shite, BLACK HOLES!

But, both the theories of relativity, while completely crazy when compared to normal human experiences, made TESTABLE predictions that could prove whether or not they were a better way to describe the universe. They are great examples of pie-in-the-sky mathematical thinking that turned out to be a better description of the universe than existed before, but took numerous experiments to prove that they weren't theories that were full of shite. (Seriously, BLACK HOLES?!)

One of these days, there's going to be another theorist like Einstein or the quantum theorists (you want to talk about something that's "painting on the walls with your own crap" crazy that is totally real, look at quantum theory) who is going to come up with an off the wall theory claiming some really crazy shite. But, unlike most scientific theories, their theory will make testable predictions that will survive the experimentalists' scrutiny. And just like, that, crazy becomes science.
