Yeah that’s a simple explanation all right.
I’m guessing these guys are way smarter than I am and ruled out the possibility that the earth’s surface could be the source of these high-energy neutrinos. If so, that’s definitely interesting.

The way I’m understanding this, it’s like observing rain “falling” upwards from the surface of the earth into the clouds.
These particles should (apparently) be hitting the surface and getting absorbed, but they seem to be flying away from it.

They are probably so smart that they overlooked a flaw in their experiment that a 9th grade science teacher with some common sense would spot right away.
