another place is the Willis area and further north. One day Conroe to Huntsville will be more popular because of I-45 access.

Huffman, TX. Grand Parkway about to go through there and it'll really open the place up.
If they would just dredge Lake Houston, would be a great place to boat and fish.

I'd do Lake Conroe or The Woodlands. Lake Livingston is a bit too country for me, my grandfather lived there.

Most have been said but I would say Lake Conroe or Galveston area. When I am thinking of retiring, you want stuff to do but also access to good health care. These two places offer both. Lake Livingston is good, but I would think too far away from the city for me. Tomball is great little community and also Magnolia, but they don’t offer the lake or gulf living that the other two have.
