Well based on all the responses I guess it’s not a troll. No offense, but your wife is truly a moron.

I'm sure you love your wife or whatever, but there's really no excuse for what she did. A marriage is a partnership. The fact that she went & got 17 racks from the bank & threw it away without even consulting you first is inexcusable. If I did that, my wife would never forgive me no matter how much I cried in the bedroom.

Do what you want, but for me personally, I'd be closely examining my marriage. You may not think so, but the fact that she didn't even call you to ask your opinion is a huge deal.

+1 on this. There is something horribly wrong with a person doing this and not telling your spouse.

Seriously, don't be too hard on your wife. These things happen all the time, and the scammers are extremely convincing. This is why you sign a wire fraud warning document when buying a house and why many title attorneys want you to use a physical cashier's check when purchasing a property.

People routinely lose 100's of thousands of dollars by wiring money to scammers pretending to be the title company. The website "portal" will mimic the actual title company in every way, and they will have every detail about the transaction. Wild stuff.

Also, my aunt fell for a similar arrest scam a few years ago, but it was something to do with backed property taxes. The name on caller ID was the sheriff's office and their phone number. I have no idea how they do that. Anyway, she was told to go buy gift cards, and it was actually the worker at the drug store who asked her why she was buying so many, thus stopping her from doing it. My aunt laughs about it now and feels so stupid, but she said she was terrified in that moment. That it felt so real.

I realize it sounds insane, but hindsight is 20/20. Your wife was probably very scared, and people are irrational when they're scared. It's that fight or flight thing. She was just operating on fear and adrenaline and clearly wasn't thinking it through.

Incredible lack of communication to not ask your husband “ hey I got this message I have a warrant out and they want $17,000 for it .. do
You think this is legit ?

Didn’t know you could buy your way out of a warrant for it to go away especially buying fartcoin or some other sketchy crypto

But instead she goes and gets a shite ton of money and dumps it on a scam to keep it on the down low

Impressive display of stupidity

No, fren... she withdrew 7k at one bank, drove to another bank (no explanation from OP as to why) and withdrew an additional 10k.

During all of this, not one teller asked her what's the big occasion nor did she bother to text her husband about the shenanigans... but she DID turn herself in to the police AFTER depositing money (I assume twice) into a coinme machine... and **then** she contacted her husband. Who then consulted the FBI agent next door.

Oh. Yeah. Troll got me.

Not trying to be a dick, but stop defending his wife. While I understand people fall for this regularly it doesn’t excuse the fact of what she did. A normal spouse would talk to your husband/wife before doing anything. A proper marriage is 50/50 and being truthful……not removing 17k without even a word. Stupid.

Again, I'm not saying it isn't stupid, I'm just saying that when people panic, they don't think rationally. I'm sure even she agrees, now, that she should have called her husband. And if she were calm and reading this story about another lady, she would probably laugh and say that woman's an idiot.

Have you ever been around people in an emergency situation? Some people completely freeze up - get completely overwhelmed with panic. These are the types who pass out when they see blood, cannot communicate with a 911 operator, and the list goes on.

I know this scam is going around, but damn. She must have actually done something illegal for her to believe this enough to withdraw that much money and deposit it without telling you first. Like she was trying to hide it from you because she knows she’s done…something.

If someone told me I had a warrant, my first reaction would be to call my spouse because it would be so incredulous. Not drive to two banks.

You’re focusing on the wrong thing. It’s not about “panic”, it’s about communication with your spouse. She drove to two banks withdrew money and then gave the money up. Not ONE call to the husband? Again, this is a potential grade A troll, but the wife is probably doing other bad things the hubby isn’t aware of.

Really surprised almost no one accused the OP of being a troll in the first page. Not the same story but it was like that one thread a poster claimed her cheating husband posted here and everyone believed it. Possible this is true but…

The OT is slacking these days with the lack of skepticism around these stories

I don't disagree, just trying to get in this poor lady's head. Even if the OP is a troll, this actually happens ALL the time. It seems insane that people fall for it, but they do.

And for the record, I think every phone call not in my contacts is a scammer. I even chewed out the AT&T guy the other day for knocking on my door lol. I live with my hackles up, so I would 100% call my husband, but I also don't clam up in tense situations.

I think this is gambling, probably cash advances on credit cards. My sister in law was in the same situation. She told her husband she had really bad news, started apologizing and he was just relieved she wasn’t having an affair. I think she ran up close to the same amount of debt.
