Man, that’s tough. Screwed up thing is that many people fall for the same shite every day. Mostly elderly folks who can’t really afford to lose that much.
I appreciate your posting this for the benefit of others.

She has a credit card you don’t know about, a drug problem, a gambling problem or a boyfriend with one of those issues. Nobody is naive enough to fall for a warrant scam to the tune of $17,000, especially without consulting their spouse first.
Do you think this stuff doesnt happen, at least not to people under 75?
A simple google search proves otherwise.

What makes you say that? It's the internet so any personal story might be a troll job but why this one specifically?
Do you think these things dont happen?

Me, too. Next time some rando calls and asks for $17,000, I'll know what to do.

have, many times. I do not recall them asking what I'm doing with the money. I do know they have forms to fill out and have to do an "override."
You don’t remember because they don’t ask you in an accusatory tone and probably just assumed they were being polite and making small talk. But I guarantee they asked you.

This is legit. This literally happened to my wife around the same time last year but am now thankful she was only dwindled for 3k and not 17k. The thief also went as far as masking the caller ID with the Knoxville County Sheriff's Department mainline. This is a legit scam

At least the grandparent scam or even parent scam makes a modicum of sense... being told YOU have a warrant that's only solvable by shitcoin is beyond belief.

Don’t be too hard on your wife.
I once contemplated over drafting my checking account to buy a premium surround sound system for a YUGE discount from a couple guys in a delivery van in the Winn Dixie parking lot. So I understand how convincing con artist can be.

Believe what you want but i actually got a call on my phone and the caller ID said it was me. Calling myself, from the phone that was in my own hand.
I had that happen to me years ago... it freaked me out and I didn't answer it and they didn't leave a VM. This was before I was aware of "spoofing".

Stop making excuses for her. She’s not very bright
To add, try to reach out to zachxbt on twitter. He can track anything and tell you where the money went. If the authorities will work with you, might be able to freeze their crypto wallet if it’s still on an exchange.

Take it for what it’s worth. I’m not going to try and convince anyone it’s real but I can assure you it is.
I understand the skepticism because I too cannot believe this happened to us. It will take a long time to get over this. There are a couple of people on TD that know me and know that it really did happen.
I have a very good wife and she is indeed hot. She is also very trusting and sees the best in people. She knows she made a huge mistake and is questioning every move she made throughout this whole ordeal. She is devastated over this and it is really hard to watch.
Again thank you to the people who gave advice and encouraging words. I truly hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

Happened to my elderly mother a couple years ago, got her for about 3k. Told her she missed a jury duty, she was scared and made some stupid decisions because of it. Ended up at the sheriff's office only to be told she was scammed.

I’d be put off by a bank teller commenting like that, pretty unprofessional.

My wife’s (no pics) aunt (you don’t want pics) in Australia got fleeced for $14k a couple of weeks ago. Claims she got a message from her bank and ended up buying a shite ton of $500 gift cards for some scammer. I think it was a love scam but she’s too embarrassed to admit it. She’s a bitch though, and I say karma finally bit her in the arse so I
at her.

My wife tends to be this way, along with being a bit of a ‘yes man’ most of the time. Our dogs got a flu shot once because she took them to the vet, and he said they needed one
I just told her that if ANYONE ever calls like this demanding thousands of dollars, to either hang up and call me or at the very least, put me on the call as well. I have a good friend that almost fell for this kind of scam because she said that in the moment, everything seems so real, and everything they were telling her seemed true. Thankfully, a cooler, more level head prevailed and she didn’t give in to their demands. She ended up calling the Sheriff’s office from her office phone to confirm the scam.

Happened to a friend's mother. She is in her late 60's and a widow. She has a master's degree from Vanderbilt, holds down a professional job where she is well regarded and is not an idiot... normally.
They told her she had a warrant out with the Nashville PD and needed to send them money. It was a weekend, so she couldn't get more than like $800 out of an ATM, so they told her visa gift cards would work, so she went to Publix and bought $5500 in gift cards and told the scammer the card #'s etc over the phone.
I don't understand how any reasonablly intelligent person can fall for this, but she says it was very convincing.
Maybe I'm a jackass, but id just tell the scammer to come arrest me and I'd have my wife bail me out. Anyyhing that I could reasonably be arrested for, traffic violation warrant etc, should have a much lower bail than $17k lol

Yeah. I admit I fell for that shite when I was young. The ole “$299.99 sticker on camcorder box but I can let you have it for $80 in a parking lot because I’ll broke” scam. Funny thing is I told him “I don’t need a camcorder . But I’ll give you $35 ”
He agreed.
I was singing sh-boom sh-boom, shalalalala, sh-boom all the way home like that old fricker on movie Roadhouse. Thinking I just scored on a premium $299 camcorder . Until I got home and found it online. $19.99 chi-na trash.
