This is true. My grandfather refused to speak of his time in the war. He was a Navy corpsmen in the Pacific. (Guam and Iwo Jima) I cannot begin to imagine the things that he saw.

Nice piece of memorabilia. That shadow box is a good idea. We did that with my Dad's medals.
He was a nose gunner on a B24 with the 15th AF in Italy
Like others have said he very seldom talked about the war. As we got older he would answer some general questions but he never initiated the conversation. If we asked something specific about combat his stock answer was, "that was so long ago I just don't remember".

One would be significant, three is quite an achievement. Your grandfather was a badass.

The stories he could tell but couldn’t bring himself to speak about.

Priceless family heirlooms that tell a silent story we can only imagine.

Your grandfather had a set of balls.

I am grateful for his service.

Subsequent awards were denoted by bronze oak leaf clusters

Well done to your grandfather.

Air Medal - Heroic or meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight...

Center - American Campaign Ribbon. -
The American Campaign Ribbon is a United States military award given to service members who performed duty in the American Theater of Operations during World War II between December 7, 1941, and March 2, 1946.

Right - The European-African-Middle East Ribbon with two Bronze stars.
EAM Campaign Ribbon recognizes U.S. military personnel who served in the European, African, or Middle Eastern Theater during World War II.

If you're interested, you could submit a request to the National Archives for a records review. I know for sure he's missing a WW2 Victory Medal and probably an Army Good Conduct Medal. If he was injured while flying a mission he could very well be entitled to a Purple Heart as well.
