I Bee Leave that's a Bumble Bee, not a Carpenter Bee.

A long torch and 5 gallon propane tank will do wonders on one of those bastards nests in the ground. Get that flame 2 feet long and roaring and point it down the hole. Point that flame at them when they fly at you and they go down in flames. What a wonderful sport!

Why was your four year old at the bottom of your pool? Sounds like sketchy parenting.

I haven't read the whole thread, but if it has a white face, it doesn't have a stinger. As a kid in the country, we used to catch them and tie kite string to them and try to get them to fly.

Male carpenter bees don't have stingers, but the females do. Males are more active, and are the ones that are commonly seen flying around their borrow, so it's a pretty safe bet that if you see one it is male. But females do have stingers (although you'd have to manhandle one in order to get stung by one.

Wasps don't breathe, they have a system of tubes and holes called, spiracles, trachea, and tracheoles that supply oxygen to every cell directly. Their blood doesn't carry oxygen just nutrients and waste.

Insects can open and close their spiracles block water/retain moisture/let air in again. If they kept them open all the time they'd dry out.

They can also have very fine hydrophobic hairs that repel water covering the spiracles. Not very well familiar with wasp anatomy specifically but when resting insects don't need much oxygen.

I'd imagine they're able to just close their spiracles and hold out without fresh oxygen long enough to survive. So yes they can effectively hold their breath longer than humans because they need less oxygen.

while not aggressive, they hurt worse than a wasp if prompted to sting.

The males can not sting and you almost never see a female unless you are digging around in the hole she bored.

They can be mistaken for bumble bees but they have "fur".

My dog will chase and catch the males all spring.

Not likely. Male carpenter bees dont have a sting. Females do but are pretty passive and have to feel threatened

100% it is a male Carpenter bee, Bumble bees have a fuzzy abdomen the Carpenter bee has a smooth slick abdomen like in the OP's pic.
