Seems like that wouldn't be feasible without getting run over by a Tesla.

If New Orleans completed one construction project ahead of schedule they could live off that accomplishment like the Super Bowl.

New Orleans will be a learning experience definitely.

Are they building for drainage or transportation?

The old Belle Chasse tunnel is a great example...but the Harvey never had the problems that Belle Chasse had.

Houma has a tunnel too. The only issue was that the tunnel should have been 4 lanes instead of two. Only in south Louisiana you reduce 4 lanes to two just to cross underwater.

Harvey was also rehabbed. They redid the porcelain walls. DOTD is supposed to rehab the Houma Tunnel next and that will be a cluster f of traffic if they close it for months like the Harvey Tunnel.

I'm curious as to the idea of where this would be to best meet the "usefulness" criteria, though.

Let's get a Mississippi River tunnel going.

Go big or go home.

What's more feasible:

Tunnel under New Orleans; or,

'Ike Dike' to install a giant seawall and floodgates covering the entirety of Galveston Bay?

What would be the point of putting a tunnel loop in New Orleans? What purpose would it serve?

Airport to downtown/conference center
NOLA is one of the most prolific cities in the country for hosting events. Showing off a tunnel for direct access to airport would be a huge proof of concept win for TBC and the city, especially given the exposure to tourists/conference attendees.
It’s not as long or ambitious of a project as say Ohare to downtown Chicago so has a higher probability of technical success you could assume from that standpoint. Also proving this can be done in an area with the water table and terrain would be a big win.

Of course. That's a given. They will steal the money and nothing will get done. Then, they will turn around and blame.......Elon, or Trump, or Vance, or Jeff Landry, or (pick anyone with an R by their name).

Will the same people who make this observation today go along with the NOLA pols and blame Elon too when the inevitable happens?

In the OP it references a one mile loop for the free tunnel, so this wouldn’t be feasible.

Interesting. I have no idea how this technology works, but there is a lot of occupied real estate and canals between Kenner and downtown. I wonder how that would work.
