In all honesty, that's some pretty awesome work by the Indian government to be that close in the 1950's, compared to all the technology available now.

How did they measure its height in the 50s?

I know we did some basic shite like this in Physics but we were calculating heights of shite like our HS stadium pressbox or a water tower 300 yards away.

There is absolutely no way I would climb Everest again (at least by the Sol Col route while technically more difficult I think the North Ridge is safer today for an experienced mountaineer) unless they cut the number of permits by 60% or more. The lines on summit days are ridiculous now, paying $50k to slowly die in an amusement park ride line is beginning to stretch sanity even for someone that completely understands the quest.
