MS Lt Gov threatens legal action if Bonnet Carré Spillway is opened

As water levels rise along the Mississippi River, threatening flooding, Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann is urging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to exhaust all possible flood control options before considering opening the Bonnet Carré spillway.
Officials are gearing up for the river to reach its highest levels in recent years near New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, prompting concerns of the infamous Bonnet Carré Spillway being utilized to reduce flood concerns.
Hosemann, recognizing the detrimental impact the spillway’s various openings have had on aquatic life in the Mississippi Sound and the region’s economy, is asking the USACE to refrain from introducing fresh water from the Mississippi River into the saltwater body. Instead, he is calling on the federal agency to utilize other water diversion methods.
“Repeated diversions of Mississippi River freshwater into the Mississippi Sound have devastated Mississippi’s coastal ecosystem, crippled our seafood industry, endangered public health, and severely harmed our tourism economy,” Hosemann wrote in a letter penned to Col. Cullen A. Jones, the Commander & District Engineer of the USACE’s New Orleans District.
quote:
Instead of opening the Bonnet Carré Spillway, Hosemann and Mississippi wildlife advocates have offered the following alternatives:
Immediate utilization of the Morganza Spillway to direct excess flow through the Atchafalaya Basin instead of into the Mississippi Sound
Emergency dredging of the Mississippi River both south of the Bonnet Carré and near the river’s mouth to increase conveyance and avoid spillway use
Utilization of the Old River control structure for diversion of flood waters prior to reaching the Bonnet Carré
Coordinated, timed reservoir releases upriver to flatten flood peaks before they reach the lower valley
“Mississippi is willing to partner on engineering evaluations, restoration plans, and infrastructure enhancements to achieve a more equitable and scientifically sound approach. But we will no longer silently bear the brunt of decisions made without regard to our waters, our wildlife, and our citizens,” Hosemann added.
“If this federal decision-making process continues to ignore Mississippi’s rights and interests, as well as the devastating effects on marine life, we will pursue every legal and political remedy available.”

If they open Bonnet Carre it means the ACoE is bored and wants to play with their toys. The forecast crest is 16.8 ft and the river will be trending down by next Tuesday and will fall fast. They need to shift their focus to river management instead of using Bonnet Carre as a crutch.

Screw Delbert and I’m a Republican in MS!

They can frick right off with that noise. That is absolutely ridiculous.
So Louisiana isn’t allowed to open a spillway to make sure the levees around the Mississippi River don’t get breached and flood Louisiana communities because the Mississippi commercial fishermen don’t want any freshwater in the Mississippi Sound?
Apparently Mississippi commercial fishermen are just as annoying and pathetic as Louisiana commercial fishermen. It’s hard to feel sorry for the fishermen because of the way they act. They deal in cash to avoid paying their taxes, they collude with corrupt government officials to obstruct projects that would preserve and restore the Louisiana coast, and they complain and threaten lawsuits constantly.
I don’t really care at this point if foreign fisheries end up putting our local fishermen out of business.

The 16.8 ft forecast crest won't even reach minor flood stage at New Orleans, which is 17 ft. The levees protect New Orleans to 20 ft.
If this was a 2011 then Bonnet Carre would be open and Mississippi would have to suck it. But it would be laughable to open it for this.

Well it's not just the fisherman, it fricks the tourism for the entire coast.
That being said, he can threaten all he want but it's not going to change anything if it is determined that the spillway needs to be opened. Hopefully the river drops and this is all for nothing.

Hmm, before the levees were built the MS River would do what the spillway did every single year - just in multiple places.
It rolled right through the swamps just south of BR all the way to NOLA and into the lakes and then into the the Chandelier sound.
Politicians and idiots.

Yall remember when this almost failed and the Mississippi River came damn close to rerouting? Yea, we arent using this either.

Louisiana doesnt control that.

So you'll do nothing but make a big mess and file lawsuits that will be dismissed. Got it.

Aren’t the parameters that determine when the Bonnet Carre is opened mandated by Federal Law (Congress)?

They are so embarrassed about their poo poo water.

ORCS is used every day to keep to 70/30 flow between the Mississippi and the Atchafalaya. They can send more than 30% down the Atchafalaya if they want to. The Atchafalaya isn't even going to reach flood stage at Krotz Springs. It could handle a higher flow for a few days.

I don't know about the Bonnet Carre Spillway but it well could be. It is for the Birds Point - New Madrid Floodway in Mississippi County, Missouri.
