For long putts, look at it from behind the cup to ball as well as go to the lowest point of the green and check out the line of your put from there.

If we're just talking about overall tips, yeah that's great.

If we're actually putting this stuff into practice, I despise people like that on the course. I'm sitting in the fairway waiting to hit my approach shot and I have to wait 10 minutes for a 4some who all think they're badass to look at the read from 4 different angles only to end up with a triple bogey. Annoying as frick.

Well, I'm not saying to do all of that when it's your turn to putt. The way I do it is to check the line between other player's shots and then give it one more quick look before I putt.

Was taught 30+ yrs ago to imagine a wagon-wheel size circle over the cup and aim for that.

My putting's never been that great but this has helped keep the 3-putts to a minimum over the years.

Not being a dick but if you're trying NOT to 3 putt you'll never be even average. TRY TO MAKE THE PUTT!!!!! Don't worry about 2nd putts.

Do a whip-it before reading putts.

-Don't use the line on the ball to line up the putt. Put the blank part of the ball up.
-Don't stand over the putt too long.
-Imagine rolling the ball not hitting it.

I use the blank part as well

Never trusted the line much because I know I can't line it up accurate enough to really do any good

Get your partner to stand behind the cup and form a backboard with his golf shoes. I've slashed a lot of strokes that way.

This is terrible advice and will get you in tons of trouble at any course with real greens.

Eta: unless you flag every approach shot. JOAP had a putt Tuesday that he would've done well to get inside 8 feet 4/10 times. Had he gotten aggressive he would have had a 25 foot putt for his 2nd

Movement should be like a pendulum. Straight back, straight forward. Keep your head down throughout the entire stroke/putt.

What?!

That line is a godsend for confidence.

Which leads me to my advice: have confidence. Envision it going in and hear that noise. Exhale, be smooth and slow in the backswing, and trust your read.

I also put my right index finger pointed down along the shaft which helps me create the pendulum action in my stroke.

And most people could use a shorter putter. You are supposed to putt like a hanging pendulum.
