Point your index fingers down the shaft of the club when you put

No practice strokes when you putt. Feel the shot, pick a line and roll it.

I think it's best to mark the line on the ball with a device that allows you to make a longer line with a sharpie. Red is the easiest color to see.

The line helped me improve much faster as it was immediate feedback as to whether or not my putter face struck the ball squarely. On a square strike you would see a straight red line as the ball rolls. From there you can understand if you had the correct line or not. It stopped me from thinking I pushed or pulled putts when it was more of a misread or vice versa.

Hitting the putt square consistently will improve your putting immensely.

I get annoyed with people that spend more than 5 seconds placing their ball down because they are trying to line up that stupid line.

My putting routine:

Mark ball. Read putt from behind the ball. Unless it's really tricky I don't read from anywhere but behind the ball. I place my ball with the line pointing on initial line I want to start on. Then I make adjustments when I stand over the putt, but don't remark the ball/line. I just use the line as a guide for my initial read.

So I don't always putt straight on the line. Helps me make sure I line up correctly based upon my initial read, but I'm not a slave to it.

People spend more time doing plenty of other things than using the line. If they're slow doing that, they're likely slow elsewhere.

Putt through the hole not to the hole. Old guy said correct speed will compensate for other errors. Having said all that I still putt for shite but I NEVER leave 'em short.

So do you prefer them to take more time taking a third putt or second putt?

Let me guess, you're a 2-3 hcp who gets irked when you can't finish a round on the weekend in under 4 hours?

Lighten up Francis. 5 seconds to place a line that leads to a two putt is better than the time it takes to go through 3 putts. The biggest time waster on the course is people sitting in the cart waiting for their partner to hit and then both going to the second ball with both people.

Don't aim for the hole.

Line up your put and aim for a spot in the line 18 inches in front of your ball. If you hit the spot and your read is right it will go in.

Just putt every putt with same mentality as one you just tap in from 6 inches. Loose relaxed and don't think

Its been said already and it sounds smarta**, but, always try to make the putt and don't think about a lag, regardless of how far you blow it past.

I'd be happier knowing I tried to make the putt and three putt, then trying to 'put it close' and end up with a three putt because my lag sucked.

Best advice I've had was to shorten my take away on short putts. This will cause you to "follow thru" and not falter due to a larger backswing.

If you struggle with getting the correct speed, take 3 practice strokes while looking at the hole.
