More than 3,000 acres of New Mexico public land being sold for oil and gas amid protests

A sale of New Mexico’s public land to the oil and gas industry was expected in May with lands going to auction throughout the Permian Basin in the southeast corner of the state.
The auction scheduled May 25 was to include 45 parcels of land in Eddy, Lea and Chaves counties, along with Cheyenne County, Kansas, according to the federal Bureau of Land Management which is holding the sale.

The BLM reported March 17 that it found oil and gas extraction on the nominated parcels of land would not significantly impact the environment.
The lands were expected to see 19 horizontal wells drilled, producing about 3.2 million barrels of oil and 18 billion cubic feet of natural gas, read the BLM’s report.

An environmental group sought to voice its opposition to leasing public land to oil and gas in court, leading a national lawsuit against the BLM’s parent agency the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Santa Fe-based WildEarth Guardians were lead plaintiffs in the suit filed Thursday, along with national groups the Center for Biological Diversity and Friends of the Earth.
Along with WildEarth Guardians, New Mexico Climate Justice, New Mexico Environmental Law Center and New Energy Economy signed on to the lawsuit.
quote:
“We have reached the point that unabated fossil fuel production now presents a clear and present danger to the climate, natural habitats and wildlife across the United States, and is unjustly burdening impacted communities everywhere.”
Jeremy Nichols, climate and energy program director at WildEarth Guardians said President Joe Biden has so far failed to deliver on promises made during the campaign trail and first term in office to reduce pollution from domestic energy production.
“Far from living up to his promise to protect the climate, President Biden is actually undermining his commitment to the American public to end fossil fuel leasing,” Nichols said.
“We can’t frack our way to a safe climate and this lawsuit aims to ensure President Biden’s administration heeds the reality that we need to transition the United States away from both the consumption and production of oil and gas.”

1- I hate when these articles refer to these lease sales/bids as “public land being sold for oil & gas”. There is no selling of these lands taking place. The government will still own the mineral estate, and the surface estate if these tracts are government-fee properties.
2- I love seeing these enviro-communists getting all worked up.

If its Permian New Mexico it's a wasteland anyway, they act like it's Yosemite

I remember during the 2020 debates soon-to-be President Biden saying he would “no longer allow oil companies to tear through our national forests”.
So about a year later, on the way to a family vacation in AZ, I drove the family through Permian New New Mexico and showed my concerned kids the “forests” that Biden said we were tearing through.
That guy’s an idiot.

3,000 acres isn’t much land. Less than 5 square miles.

What an absolute disgrace this country has become that we turn to these clowns for approval before we can sell land.

Umm….it is government-owned land.
And it’s not being sold.

If I led this group the first thing I would do is change the name to something that sounds professional.

First time I heard this name, I thought of those jackholes who dress up in futuristic outfits and get in line at 1AM to be the first ones to see the latest Star Wars movie in theaters.
I soon learned that they actually cause real issues in oil & gas operators and midstream companies trying to do business in areas like Colorado, NW New Mexico and parts of Pennsylvania and Montana. These are the kinds of groups that sued the Biden Administration last year in a enviro-commie favorable court to revoke an oil & gas lease awarding in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Environmental justice" activists might be the most insufferable of all of the activists--and that is saying something.

You really think BLM stands for Black Lives Matter here, don't you? Just because it is likely a scrub mesquite forest, doesn't mean it ain't a forest. Honestly, I would just be ticked because with public lands, everyone should be getting the profits, and we all know it will be corruption from beginning to end and "the public" won't see a penny. Not to mention, what would you all say if this land was being sold or leased to a corporation with "foreign" ties, because that has been happening quite a bit as well.

So the land is still public, right? Did they just sell extraction rights? I'm ok with it if so.

If they care so much then they’re welcome to place bids.

Your garden variety econazi would shout for joy to see anything even oil related to break up the monotony after driving for hours through the big empty. They just wouldn't want you to catch them doing it.

That’s called being a parent, which you already knew. Unfortunately people like you and people with common sense are becoming harder and harder to find.

New Mexico is like a 3rd world country. The people there are poor and lazy.
Easily the worst state in the US.
Beautiful landscape though, but where they are talking about it’s literally nothing for miles and miles. I almost ran out of gas driving through there. It would say “some shitty town” 11 miles, “some other shitty town” 24 miles, “some other shitty town” 42 miles. And none of them were actually towns. They were abandoned “towns” of about 10 buildings total surrounded by nothingness for miles.

I’ve been to oil towns all over this great land and Hobbs is the bottom of the bottom for me. Even worse than a Williston or Watford City. Truly a hell scape
