BREAKING: new construction has a few hangups as panic grips the public

The terminal was originally scheduled to open in May, 2018. When they decided to put expansion pack 1 in at the same time, that moved it to Sept 2018.

So we are already 10 months behind schedule and still finding major construction defects.

If only there were methods to deal with this issue.

Why didn't they just build the new terminal next to the old one?

Not enough room and they wanted better highway access

Lowest bid + DBE requirements

Don't remember all the details, but I don't think the team won who had the lowest bid, think there was a lawsuit over this. Also hearing the major stuff that's messed up wasn't the primary responsibility of a dbe firm.

Regardless heard rumors for years that everyone knew the team they did pick would mess it up, in part due to lack of experience and project management concerns on this type of project.

The airport budget was initially $800 million, but due to adding a concourse and enhancements to the project it is now at $1 billion.

I’m willing to bet it’s probably closer to $1.5B

So many construction and design issues. Lowest bid + DBE requirements

you are on to something, but not totally true in this case.

in this case, it was:
1-an out of town company was the low bidder on the surcharge. the sand piled up to compress the existing swamp, so that future ground sinking is minimized. Well, Mitch cut this short, so that this terminal could happen on his watch.

2-the bid process in this case was a "presentation", not a straight low bid. the allows for games to be played.

3-the engineering firm that has done every bit of geotechnical engineering that i am aware of in my time in this industry. they had nothing to do with this set of plans.

Typical Louisiana / New Orleans cluster.....

I know it's fun to blame Mitch... but Mitch didn't personally design the terminal or construct it.

But Mitch certainly tried to rush it through so it could potentially be ready for the tricentennial.

Only have two issues with the former mayor.... 1) someone should have been brutally honest with him and told him they would never meet the initial timeline even if construction went perfectly, with no delays. Maybe he was told that, who knows...., and 2) His bloodfeud with Jindal, equally earned by both parties, delayed even the preliminary planning for new I-10 access ramps. Both of them should have sucked it up and worked together to benefit everyone, maybe the ramps would only be 1-2 years away instead of 4 or 5.

City, New Orleans Aviation Board Secures $35 Million in Additional Funding for New Terminal Construction Project - 9/20/2018 -

VIEW DOCUMENT

NEW ORLEANS – Today, the City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Aviation Board announced that it has secured an additional $35 million in funding for the new 35-gate replacement airport terminal currently under construction at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY). The $35 million increase includes a $20.3 million airport infrastructure grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as part of its Airport Improvement Program (AIP) for airports across the United States. This brings the total cost for the new terminal construction project—which will deliver a completely new, state-of-the-art airport facility to the Greater New Orleans region—from $993.7 million to $1.029 billion.

The terminal construction project is currently over 75% complete, and the new funding sources will allow the Airport to add new features into the project that will further enhance the operations for airlines and passengers, support continued coordination with architectural designers as the project approaches completion, increase the level of funds set aside for any necessary changes yet to be identified, and cover costs to address issues the contractors have come across in the construction process—which is common with any major construction project.

The Airport’s contractors, Hunt-Gibbs-Boh-Metro Joint Venture (HGBM), announced today at the New Orleans Aviation Board meeting that they are currently addressing an issue with settlement of a sewer line that requires an adjustment to the construction schedule. Because a functional sewer line is necessary for the facility to be completely operational, the Board approved a new plan to open the terminal to the public on May 15, 2019, instead of the previously scheduled date

You just can’t make this up.

This was a press release from Sept 2018

I've also heard that all of the high profile food vendors are extremely upset with the set up for them and it doesn't lend itself to cooking the high quality food promised.

Honestly I think we desperately need a new airport and am looking forward to it, but goddamn this city and state can't do anything right.

We all know that New Orleans is a shithole. Not debatable.

On top of the current 1-2" of sinking, where the foundation is pulling away so much from the glass of windows the terminal is open to the elements, the joint venture forgot to account for the weight of the build out in the terminal (airline counters, computers, x-ray machines, conveyors, etc.) so the terminal will sink even more when they add the finishing work.

So they said it was pushed back to September. Any word on what the latest estimate for the opening is?

So they put styrofoam under the last runway project to help with the “coffee ground” soil that Kenner is know for. So now they build a new airport and don’t think the utilities will sink? This is an embarrassment to the area. Should have build the mega airport in donaldsonville and taken it away from CNO

Those "high quality" food vendors already don't operate their restaurants at MSY, they just sell their prepackaged food to a third party operator who reheats it on site.
