Why was the helicopter flying so low?
Posted on 12/16/21 at 9:57 am to Tchefuncte Tiger
It was extremely foggy. I assume that had something to do with it.

I won’t post it here but there is a video of the body laying on the highway next to the wreckage with extreme detail. Was taken by a car passing by
There’s only the censored versions out there, right?

So the guy was Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) rated?

I'm not a pilot and I'm not an engineer... and I didn't pay too much attention in physics class... it's crazy to me that hitting a transmission wire would sheer off the rotor and cut the cabin open.

I worked with the pilot at EMS a few years back. He was a real good dude. RIP J.H.

You have a roughly 3500lb helicopter flying at 100-150mph. The impact force is immense.

Seeing as how the biggest part of my adult working life was spent flying in them, not to mention the numerous HUET and BOSEIT certifications I've taken, it's not a stretch...in fact it's highly likely...that I know just a touch more about helicopters than you.
Not so subtle undisputed helicopter expert brag. But relevant.

Judging by your desire to see the impact tells me that you're also the type that probably likes watching people being deheaded by terrorists, amirite?
To some of these sickos it’s like the money shot in pron I guess.

I don’t think we’re using this phrase anymore but it was quite witty for a short time.

Me either but I think civilian helos are generally very thin and light and hence vulnerable.

You go, girl! What you do not know dick aboot is why I wanted to see the crash. I was more interested in the physics, and mechanics, of how it handled the crash. crumple zones, frame strengths, etc.

Physically SEE him? Well no shite dumbass.

My buddy sent me a video last night that isn't censored. You can clearly see the pilot laying on the spillway.
Posted on 12/16/21 at 12:01 pm to DingleBarry
Yikes, I can only imagine my reaction of horror if seeing that in person. Damn!
Posted on 12/16/21 at 12:16 pm to Briella
There are completely uncensored version of the video.

I worked with him as well. He flew a charter flight for my company a few months ago. Also did some drone work together. Nicest guy you'll ever meet. We had numerous discussions on safety. I'm shocked this happened. I can't make sense of it.

Could the pilot convert from VFR to IFR while in transit?
Yea, but per FAA rules has to remain in VFR conditions until cleared by ATC to enter IMC.
At that point they would’ve given him vectors and an altitude to maintain that would’ve been clear of all nearby obstacles.

As a helicopter mechanic with 27 years experience, 23 years with 407's Ive seen the aftermath of what happens when a rotor under full power does when it hits something solid. The force will rip the transmission/Main Rotor Gear Box (part that is driving the main rotor via the Mast) from the aircraft, usually taking a large part of the roof with it. The Wire Strike Protection System has cutters projecting above and below the fuselage with a center deflector mounted between the left and right windshields. It is not designed to cut wires that thick. It probably hit the aircraft, slid up and possibly over the upper cutter or just broke it off and then the wire either hit the mast or got into the rotor system and started the event.
