Sure he would have had a better chance; from 0% to 5% maybe

would the impact still have killed him?

More than likely

“Get there itis” common term used in fatal aviation accidents involving controlled flight into obstacle/terrain. To early to comment but ceilings are definitely low and probably could have benefitted from filing an instrument flight plan. That would guarantee his obstacle clearance as he’s mandated to fly at certain altitudes with instruments. This is the similar type of situation that got Kobe Bryant.

If you have ever seen a helicopter

Seeing as how the biggest part of my adult working life was spent flying in them, not to mention the numerous HUET and BOSEIT certifications I've taken, it's not a stretch...in fact it's highly likely...that I know just a touch more about helicopters than you.

Physically SEE him? Well no shite dumbass.

Apparently, you are quite sensitive, Nancy.

Tell me you don't know me without telling me you don't know me. Judging by your desire to see the impact tells me that you're also the type that probably likes watching people being deheaded by terrorists, amirite?

I just don't have that sick need in me. Call me weird.

Helicopter was equipped with cutters on it too. He was having to skud run from the fog and never saw the lines. The line must have barely missed the top cutter and hit the rotor

Would a VFR flight following help in this situation? Could the pilot convert from VFR to IFR while in transit?

If you look at the vid good the cab looks destroyed on the way down. Pilot might not have even made it through the initial event.

Yea the wires were prob so thick it may have peeled the cab open once it hit the cutter

if you look at the dash cam footage...the whole cabin was taken off and completely destroyed. He may have been dead from the power line impact...i dont think we know...but the angle at which he is falling with no cabin around him...yea water would have killed him too.

Aren’t most 407’s not even IFR capable? Poor guy likely hit fog quickly and thought he could run low to ground until clearing. Didn’t want to turn back and risk spatial disorientation like the Kobe crash?

This is truly amazing. This is the first time a news site had the video of interest at the beginning of the article and not under several feet of advertisement videos.

There are some that are IFR capable.

one simple, fatal mistake

27 years of aviation speaking,,,,,there’s a whole serious of poor choices that lead to this event, there were probably several capture opportunities that passed through his thoughts that he didn’t act on. Water crash survival, not likely,,,,,,he could have crashed onto any surface and the g forces woulda got him. You don’t survive a wire strike that separates the MR and a vertical departure from straight and level flight. It’s never happened and it never will.

Truly amazing more lives weren't lost...as bad as it was, could've been a lot worse. Prayers for the pilot's family.

The driver of the other truck had a better reaction time. Looked like he got stopped before driving through the wreckage.

I won’t post it here but there is a video of the body laying on the highway next to the wreckage with extreme detail. Was taken by a car passing by.

Edit. I will add that in watching the video my first thought was that I couldn’t believe people were videoing the body and no one was stopping to try to even see if he had a pulse.

Likely a fully loaded semi. Even so, his best bet was to push on through
