So why are the libs mad at Cornell? Sounds like they handed out plenty of punishment, deserved or not. There's not much harsher discipline a school can do than expel a student. Any criminal charges should be up to the local police department.

The contention I've read is that Cornell withheld information from the local police in order to handle it internally that would have made it more likely for the prosecutor to pursue charges at the time.
That seemed to be what the prosecutor claimed at least.

She gave a detailed written statement to campus police (albeit 3wks later). She got a rape kit done (worthless 3wks out). Was interviewed. Described events further. There was nothing indicating rape in any of her statements.
But at the end, after laying out all the facts, she opined "I'm like 100% sure it was rape." The entire packet was sent to the DA, with a condensed summary. Based on the facts she related, district attorneys came to the conclusion there was no rape ... her opinion that it was "100% rape" notwithstanding.
Now the DA is claiming he didn't see the totally irrelevant "100% rape" part and insinuating that would have made a difference.

i'd add... the local DA declined to review the evidence itself after reading, and relying on a summary from the university police. From that the DA said 'nothing in the summary indicated a crime had occurred'. But in fairness to DA, the Univ Police reportedly omitted her statements that she was raped and surrounded by a group of men. It also apparently didn't include the 'free pussy', 'come whip it out bros' invitation either.
