In general, staying active takes care of physique and the strength. People weren't fat 40 years ago and they rarely worked out.

I belong to a gym and go maybe a day or two per week. I ride bikes with my kid, walk, do yard work etc. It keeps me from getting fat but I definitely don't watch my diet much which keeps me from being skinny.

Work out so I’m not wolfing down 4-5 pills every night because I have high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

Being fit will help and I commend you for your focus on your health but genetics play a much bigger role in those conditions you mentioned. You can run a marathon every weekend but you’ll never outrun your genetics.

I am underweight, if that matters.

I worked out 12-15 hours a week years ago. I get the same exercise now doing stuff outdoors, and enjoy the hell out of it a lot more.

Maybe my standards have lowered as I’ve aged but a dad bod is fixable but being an a-hole, not so much. Kindness and confidence are very attractive in a guy.
Nailed it. I am in my mid fifties and fit the dad bod stereotype somewhat. Work out five times a week and look good enough for my age (5’10” 184 lbs). But genuine kindness and steady confidence have been my greatest assets for quite some time.

That's not a complaint. That's just what is.

I am currently at single digit body fat with washboard abs... put me side by side with the dad bods and skinny fats and line me up police station criminal lineup style with them and have women pick the most attractive physique behind 2 way glass and I guarantee you the dad bod/skinny fats won't win.

Watch what women do, not what they say. Women are liars. They say they prefer dad bods and find them attractive because they are too ugly/fat to get men with lean and muscular physiques, so they say they prefer dad bods as a rejection buffer. "I was never into guys with 6 packs anyway!"

Like anything else, it somehow becomes a thing, then it becomes cool to like it so all of a sudden it becomes attractive.

Sort of how it all of a sudden became cool to be scared of clown or hate the word moist.

Diet has way more to do with how you look than the gym and it isn’t that hard.

That’s definitely one of the problems. Plenty of people “work out” to get in shape but still eat like shite. They don’t lose weight and get pissed and quit. Or maybe they eat “healthy” but they don’t know what that really means.

Also the standards for what being fat is keeps changing. The average dad bod today would be considered pretty fat 50 years ago. The average woman now weighs more than the average man in the 60s did.

They think that because they work out they have "earned" the right to eat whatever they want. I used to be guilty of this. I'd work out or do some strenuous physical activity and reward myself with bad food choices. And I got fatter.

I've seen guys in my gyms over the years who never got any leaner.

Diet and a lack of general physical activity. Find the people who don't do yardwork, or play a sport, etc. You'll find more obesity.

The biggest changes from the 70's to today has been the lack of occupational physical work and the lack of people doing their own home maintenance.

People spend about 1/4 of the time outdoors as they did.

But it’s diet. You don’t have to go to the gym or do extensive cardio to lose weight. Like someone said, the average first world person wasn’t as heavy even 30 years ago as the average first world person is now. And it’s not like they worked out way more.

Yup. I used to be guilty of this. Would work out for two hours, then order a 14 inch pizza for dinner. Worked out from 18-24 and probably got in worse shape than I was in before. Finally said no more, not worth going to the gym 5-6 days a week if you eat like shite

I know it's diet. I do cardio 5 times a week but still am overweight. When I diet, I lose the 30 pounds, when I don't, I gain it back. Regardless, blood pressure is normal and resting pulse is in the 50s.

Many are ignorant about how many calories are actually burned when working out. They have no idea so they think that because they work up a sweat and breathe hard that they must be burning tons of calories. I used to think this.

In reality you might burn 200 calories or so during a 30 minute workout. Not really that much.

The human body evolved to be efficient, if we burned thousands of calories from working out we would all have such high food requirements to survive that most of us would starve to death.
