Hefty challenge once he makes it down to the deep water and swift currents competing with barge and large ship traffic.

There used to be a ‘street view’ some guys did down most of the duration of the MS River on Google Maps. Not sure why it isn’t there anymore.

There is a lot of barge traffic on the Upper Mississippi and the current by the St. Louis Arch is six knots. He will be okay as long as he keeps it close to shore.

25 years ago I. October after 9/11 my buddies and I were camping at the old river control structure. A Kayaker came to our came and had supper with us. He was a teacher from Minnesota and has started at the headwaters.

Its been done, and the team leader wore an LSU hat the entire way. I hosted the group at my house for a few days on their way north. I was asking him about his LSU hat since he is from Minnesota. He said he’d forgotten his hat back home and he bought an LSU hat because it was the closest colors he could find to a MN Viking hat.

As the mom of a 19 year old, this story literally makes my heart freeze up.
The Mississippi is not safe for Kayakers. Period. Not only does it travel at amazing speeds with undertow and currents it’s full of logs, debris and commercial boats. If he were to go in, he’d never make it out.

One of my good friends just canoed the Mississippi for two weeks. Started at the very beginning of the river. It starts out very small.
