Missing Work/Assignment for Protest

My wife just informed me that she has an employee that is saying she cannot have a project turned in on time because she is at the protests.
As an American, it's her right to protest. As an employer, educator, responsible party, how in the world does one think that this absolves them of their responsibility?
By the way, the assignment was given on Wednesday, protests did not start in Baton Rouge until 2:00 p.m. today... What kind of consequences should she face?

The guy in the other thread said the BR protest today is already over and didn’t even last an hour.

Firing her may make her happy as her unemployment would be nice and she would start a GoFundMe and make some more money. Because obviously she was discriminated against

Fire the worker.
Someone else needs a job right I'm sure.

The fact that she is at a protest irrelevant. Project isn't done on time she should any repercussions that would fall on any other employee that doesn't finish their project.

Hmmm … you may not be eligible for UE if fired for cause. Performance in this case.

She should face punishment in line with anyone else not getting the job done without an excusable reason.
If important and given a firm and reasonable deadline it can be serious.
If a throwaway assignment that was also complicated by things like work from home and not an important deadline- a serious talk about priorities
