So they conducted a survey and found that teenagers went to the mall more than 20-30 somethings who went more than the 40-50 somethings? That is shocking information.

Um. I don't know how old you are but you just described the entire 80s and malls boomed. Hell it was that factor that caused them to sprout up everywhere.

I prefer to shop online but sometimes you need stuff now. I had to go to Dillard’s to buy a pair of black dress shoes the other night I needed for a funeral. I’ll order online when I can as I typically can find better prices.
I still go Black Friday shopping. It’s people watching at its finest and i look forward to it every year.

Two kinds of malls will survive:
1. The ones with high end anchors (Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, macy’s, belk) with specialty stores and boutiques and higher quality food courts.
2. Low end ones anchored by stores like Burlington/TJ Maxx/Ross/Marshall’s, full of more “urban” based stores, and more of those smaller ethnic boutiques, you’ll find barber shops/salons and nail salons here.
Every generation needs its places to hang out. Millennials grew up with AOL/yahoo chat rooms blowing up so they did most of their socializing there. Coffee shops like Starbucks and Fast Casual places like Chipotle’s were their meet ups. Late Boomers and most of Gen X grew up with the Mall boom. Gen Z will have the two places I described above.

Im sorry, was amazon around in the 80s? Nope.
People go to the mall, find what they want so they can see it in person/try it on. Then poof. Buy it on amazon for cheaper while still in the store.

Oh I tend to generally agree with you that I don't see how malls Will survive. And they certainly won't survive in their 1980s form exactly. But I never count out capitalism for finding a way. And it starts with having bodies in the building which honestly several years ago they didn't have. I found myself in the mall a couple of times at what should have been busy hours and there couldn't have been 50 people in there

In LA, the only malls that seem to be thriving are the outdoor ones with high end dining and high end anchors. People walk their dogs, bring the whole family, etc. I’m not sure how much actual shopping is taking place, but the eateries are typically busy.
