Bingo. If I put more than 30k in my savings I would be gone before I could submit this post on company time.

I know quite a few people that their first job after college had them working 6 10s.

Honestly I would probably rather work 40 hours for like $70k a week than that 996 for $100k
996 would be almost double the work for only 42% more pay

I'm a 30 year old millennial and I have terrible work life balance.
I work 50-60 hours a week in a fricking cubicle doing high-impact work for a very large corporation and I'm underpaid AS frick.
But it'll be good on my resume so I don't really complain unless people like you beg for it with threads like this.

The only people I know that work those hours are at investment banks or McKinsey and make absurd money. They also hate their lives.
Work-life balance at investment banks is horrid as a general rule, but McKinsey and the major competitors in strategy consulting are pretty damn good with benefits (besides just compensation), and hours can vary a lot based on your project, your client, and your case manager.
Most of them have either unlimited or five weeks per year of vacation, very generous maternity and paternity leave, all sorts of physical and mental health programs, and usually a sabbatical program of some sort (either go work at a non-profit or something similar for three to six months gratis on the firm's dime or go work for a client for three to six months in some sort of strategic role), etc., etc. If you're at a cool area for a client site and want to stay the weekend, many of them will fly out a friend or spouse to hang.
The travel is what really gets you in strategy consulting. You're basically living out of a hotel at least four days per week for about as long as you are at McKinsey or one of the major competitors unless you end up having an industry specialty that has a huge cluster of potential clients near your home office (finance in NYC, media in LA, O&G in Houston, tech in SF, etc.).

The young professional was expected to stick to a grueling work schedule that has become so pervasive in Chinese companies that it’s now commonly referred to as 996: working from nine in the morning to nine in the evening, six days a week.
I mean, holy frick.
What's the point? You can't enjoy life with that schedule.

I work four days on four days off it’s pretty freaking nice

I think our country should move to a 4 10's standard, but that'll never happen because of the banks.

The year I was on this schedule was glorious.

I am in outside sales, I can kinda make my own schedule, generally do 730-5ish. It’s pretty nice to get out of the grind of having to be somewhere for a set time.
If I have to go back it will hopefully be 4 10s

To be fair, this sounds absolutely terrible.

Why on the OT is it cool and tough to have a shitty job that works a lot?
But it isn’t cool to go a party with friends that has beer and food?

Not saying that jobs with awful hours are cool (though some of the jobs do involve really cool work), just saying awful hours happen for a lot of young people in America

I feel like a lot of people in here are bragging about having to work a lot

It is the OT people brag about everything. Most of my friends who are in specialties with awful hours in residency don't enjoy the absurd hours but they just know it is something they have to do to finish their training

Because labor laws are a good thing and they lack those.

Old people upset that we have a service economy now and have technology that makes us 10x more efficient than they were.
They worked 80 hours/week in manufacturing plants and lived unhappy lives. They’re just jelly I left work at 2:00 today and I’ve been laying on my bed having a movie renting marathon on Amazon.
