For a lot of these workaholic cultures in Asia, it seems enjoying life takes a back seat to appearing successful.
The worst part is the guy says he doesn't even need to be there that late, meaning he could get all his work done earlier. But you gotta stay late anyway to keep up appearances. People do that in the US too but not to that extreme

With a lot of the labor laws, there is a difficult time for many to gain full employment.
Working part time often means working part time for 2 jobs. And sometimes having a third gig on the side.
There is nothing like labor laws intended to help low wage earners forcing the opposite effect (the inability to gain full employment with benefits)
