My employer requires premium fuel in their vehicles. They believe it's more efficient. I think it's bullshite.

I'm straight 87 in all my personal vehicles unless I'm going for performance. Then, I'm getting 93.

When I lived in Iowa 89 was the cheapest gasoline compared to low or high grade

Due to the ethanol

My BMW recommends 91 octane. Never seen 91 octane. Use 93

My wife's recommends 89, so that's what we use

At 11:1 CR from the factory, it will and that is why GM recommends a higher octane.

That was the gist of my question. Wasn't sure what engine you were running. 427 I assume?

Manual says 91 or higher required. Maybe look at 87 when it's out of warranty.

I use mid grade in all my vehicles and there's a noticeable difference in performance for the better.

The mid and high grades have special detergents and additive packs that the 87 octane does not. A few tanks of mid grade every now and then might do some good cleaning your engine of build-up.

I've always bought the cheap gas. I do only buy from name brand companies like Exxon or Shell but still only the low octane.

Chances are, the fuel was purchased from one of the big boys anyways, just different additives.

Every now and then like before a trip I'll fill up with the mid-grade. I have no idea why tbh.

, marketing is why. People think of octane ratings as grades. Given the same environmental factors, run your engine on the lowest octane rating it can handle.

The only difference in the fuels are the additives that give it the higher octane rating. As far as things like "Techron", it's in all Chevron fuels at the pump.

The difference in the price is due to the price of the additives that generate the higher octane rating. It has nothing to do with the quality of the fuel.

93 does not increase a normal cars performance. It should be used if the manufacturer requires this high of an octane.

Not necessarily true. If you use Top Tier gas, it will have the same detergents in all octane ratings. The only difference are the additives that determine when the fuel ignites.

It is possible some non Top Tier fuel have different detergents between the ratings, but it isn't likely.

If you ever wonder how people can be stupid enough to fall for scams, some of the responses in this thread tell you everything you need to know.

PPL are really dumb when it comes to octane rating of gasoline. I thought the OT would be a little better than the responses here.

I bought it yesterday, but only because I was not paying attention when I made my selection.

My old Chevy beater that I use for work and for fricking off in the woods pings with 87, but does fine with 89.

Same types of detergents but the amount of those detergents can differ between grades depending on the brand. Shell, Costco, Chevron, BP, and others increase the detergent add-pack with octane rating.
