Honestly I have a hard time getting worked up about this.

I see it like hiring teenagers off the books to do work on short notice during the summer, except that these teenagers can hang drywall

Unfortunately it happens all the time since our government doesn’t enforce immigration laws.

These same guys will also end up working for a labor wrangler who changes the name of his LLC every year or so. How do you think metal stud framing or concrete construction happens in commercial jobs? You think all those people are legal?

It’s each persons choice but hiring a legal person from the US and paying them cash is illegal too.

Which unlawful activity really bothers you?

if you had a bilingual bossman

IF you get one guy who is bilingual and will act as the Foreman, you can get great work out of these crews. Just make sure that the Foreman understands that his pay (higher than theirs) is entirely dependent on the finished work product.

If he understands that, he will make them work their asses off and you will be happy.

That being said, I am talking about stuff like yard work or exterior painting. You are insane if you let these guys in your house. That includes using the bathroom. Tell them ahead of time they have to go piss at the nearest gas station or get a port a potty if it is a multi-day job.

If you want to break up a small slab and haul it away or, remove some shrubery..... sure, Manual labor outside shite. But there's a reason they not hired on with a crew that knows what they are doing.

My experience with a lot of these guys is they want a day rate regardless of hours worked. Like $150-$200 a day or something like that.

You hire them by the job not by the day. You'll be shocked at how fast it gets done. Also, hire them for labor only...not skilled labor. There's a difference. Need bricks moved from point A to point B? These are your guys. Need a moving truck unloaded? Yep, these are your guys. Need a shelter framed out? These are NOT your guys.

My mom and I went to the Home Depot on Coursey. I had her accompany me because she is from South America and Spanish is her first language (and because I was lazy as a child and made little effort to be bilingual). They gave us a price to tear up our existing flooring downstairs and replace it with new flooring we had purchased already (thinset, spacers, tiles, etc.) The guys were nice. My mom made small talk throughout the time they worked on our house (about two days to do 800 sq feet downstairs.

I ended up having to buy more mortar and a chipping hammer rental because they wasted the mortar letting it sit out in the rain and for some reason, they didn't have a chipping hammer? Almost every other tool at their disposal besides that.

Three Honduran men with their own trucks. The guys had "business cards" which were just a name, number, and company name. All cash transaction. Again, really friendly guys. Altogether it was about three dudes that busted floors with us 8-5 for two days.

I would do it again for a flooring/painting job but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing more than that.

I’ve never heard of an “ICE raid” in decades.

ICE is raiding places like the chicken processing plants in MS where the company is giving out tons of fake SSN's, they aren't raiding your house for the 3 Hondurans you hired to do yard work. Biggest reason for that is that a lot of ICE/CBP/DHS people are using the same guys as you to do theirs.

We used them to remove and old concrete and wood fence once, they worked harder than any teenager you will find.

"All they want to do is work" can be said while they're headed towards our border and while they're amassed at our border. Many people won't say that, however, until they make it to Home Depot.

5 years ago I had a home renovation and upon completion I needed the whole interior of the house painted. I stopped by Home Depot to buy some stuff and came across this guy standing at the end of the parking lot, wearing painting clothes. As usual, no English but I speak some Spanish so communication was not a problem.

I hired him for 8-5 pm shift for $150 a day. The job consisted of 7 days work. I had to pick him up and drop him off at HD since he had no transportation. He did a good job painting and I was happy I was able to help him.

2 weeks after the job was done he called me asking if he had additional work or painting to be done. I told him no, sorry. He probably had a hard time finding work, who knows.

Literally just got off the phone with a co worker who hired someone at Home Depot to install some new doors at our office.
