You really think the guy at home depot is living off the government and freebies? If a person has figured out that scam, they aren't getting up before dawn to go to a home depot parking lot so that they can beg you to let them do menial labor.

If you are having a slow day. Pull up in your pickup. Negotiate a good rate for them and have them load up in the back of your pickup. Pull up to a house under construction and have them get out. Walk them to the house. Fake like you forgot something in the truck and pull off. LMAO.

I have. Twice. Once for a small drywall job (i had all the materials) and the other to demolish a small structure. They busted their asses, were nice, and there was no drama.

Kick your arse? They usually know somebody with transportation. They're Catholics with big extended families that are able to relocate to other cities in order to avoid authorities. I realize that cities like Brownsville, McAllen, etc have surprisingly low homicide rates, but it's still probably not wise to screw them over in a malicious way.

Noted.

Again, that's not why these people are here. Doing side work for cash at HD is not the driving force.

along with the countless businesses from small contractors to corporations.

Now you're starting to get the point.

Instead of streamlining the work visa program to supply the needed labor, the feds just maintain the dysfunctional status quo

The Visa program isn't the problem, the illegals shouldn't be here in the first place. The wide open border is the issue, and both parties have had their hand in that over the years.

But the fact of the matter is they are here, and sucking up the social services we all pay for. I'm not going to blame a person who actually wants to get some benefit by getting some work done on their property.

I mean I was kidding. You’d have to be a real piece of trash to do that to them

Bad idea. You should not hire anyone unless they can show you proof of ability to work legally in the United States, references, and a background check.

I've used them on 2 jobs: sod and some sheet rock work. They are driving up their prices now. Used to be able to get them for $125 to $200 per day and they had their tools. Now they want much more and won't get any materials. They got their union now!!

Seems fair. Don't know about $250-$300 a day.

Hired some to help me put in a new driveway about 15 years ago. Really knew what they were doing. I got a great crew that time and gave them a bonus at end of day. Saved a lot of money over hiring a concrete contractor. Another time hired some to do the concrete work for a back yard patio slab. Not so good a crew that time. But still came out OK for a patio in the back yard. Had to really supervise them on that one.

Find the Honcho and talk to him. He'll pick the guys and set the rate. The guys he picks will determine how good they are and is dependent on the rate you are offering. If you lowball, he will pick the worst and save the best for better paying jobs.

Find out if the honcho has experience in what you are needing done. That's what really matters. It's a bonus if the guys he picks have that experience.

Be very very clear about what you want (take pictures), about the time frame, transport, etc. To be cliché X2- "set expectations" and "no surprises". They have no reason to argue and no reason to stick around... they can smell a gringo prick who is going to stiff them a mile away (if you're that type of guy).

Don't expect them to work like a regular construction crew. From my experience the will take breaks but they are centered around starting a tough stretch of whatever project. And don't be surprised if they are drinking on the job. It's the honco's job to make sure that doesn't go too far. You'll have to pick up after them. Go over the job with the honcho before he leaves.

Generally, I've had very good luck with them if you find the right honcho. And if you buy him some beer, your job will go very smoothly.

not really, I've had good to very good experiences with such. But yeah, especially the roofers, like to drink beer while working. Normally unacceptable; pretty much common for them.

never seen this and I've been using imported specialists for decades, they show up when they say they will, they work their asses off until the job is complete, they take one quick lunch break, usually bring their own food
