A little open handed slap to bring a woman to her senses isn’t the worst thing in the world. It’s not to wound. It’s to knock some sense into them.

More people need to be slapped in this world

Maybe if women got slapped more often by men then they would realize that they can't beat up a man and therefor (in theory) not be so aggressive and talk so much shite to men.

The one I've always found really strange is from a Dick Van Dyke Show episode c. 1964.
Whole lotta spanking resulted from that show:

Just noticed in that Titanic gif that Billy Zane slaps one way, but Kate Winslett goes the wrong way from which the slap would actually send her.

Every one should watch The Quiet Man from the early/mid '50s. John Wayne is a prize fighter who killed a guy in the ring, so he returned home to rural Ireland. He and Maureen O'Hara fall in love. I can't remember the particulars, but she gets out of line and pisses him off. So he throws her out of his house and proceeds to drag her across a couple of miles of fields to return her to her family. In the process, after smacking her a couple of times and roughly pulling her arm, he boots her in the arse when she isn't moving fast enough.

Of course, in the end, she loves him all the more for loving her enough to beat her into submission. However, I don't think that storyline would fly ~65 years later.

Sidenote: Maureen O'Hara was red hot back in her prime.

She was my first crush. I got to watch McClintock with my grandfather several times as a kid and she really did it for me.

The brother(Head of the house) doesnt approve of the marriage and doesnt give them her dowry. You see back then the family of the bride paid you to take the women off their hands. Anyway, she calls John Wayne a coward for not demanding her dowry from her brother but he is scared to fight due to killing a man in the ring. In the end he says frick it and drags the woman back to her brother(6 miles) and basically says boot up or shut up and the best fight scene in movie history takes place.
