re: Men of the OT, how much would it take to move?

I retired last year but my employer had asked me to stay on in a different capacity well before I did, it's a pretty cushy retirement gig but I entertain the occasional offer, mostly unsolicited, some of these are pretty sweet and fortunately at this point money isn't a big issue, it's what the new opportunity is, I'm thinking of making maybe one last move because the opportunities to do some new things are dwindling each year, pretty much boils down to sitting down with the old lady and deciding if we're ready to punch

We'd have to start at 30% and then see exactly where it is.

I’m not moving so can’t be quantified. Also, I’m my own boss, so I’m not relocating either.

I don't know if money is worth it. We have all four grandparents that are active in our children's lives that live within a 30 minute drive.

More money is nice, but the life we built here with friends and family is worth more than moving across country for me.

I think this is a serious issue to attracting labor resources nationwide.

Just for it to be a lateral move, the following must occur:
1. Spouse able to transfer/doesn't work/gets new job as well
2. Costs even out- either move to lower cost of living area, or pay is increased for direct housing costs PLUS indirect costs (increased mortgage costs, utility use, taxes, tuition for private schools, etc... maintain existing level of disposable income).
3. Desirable area in which to relocate, with comparable properties to purchase to avoid capital gains taxes.
4. Increased flexibility for at least one parent due to loss of support network.
5. No geographic limitations from non-compete agreements, custody arrangements, etc.

The financial risks are too great to relocate for potential advancement- the increase must be immediate and tangible.

People who think they can draw out of town candidates need a reality check... that will only work if you are located in a lower cost of living area that people in the experience bracket you are targeting wish to move to. Otherwise, prepare to back the truck up, which is going to cause you to match or lose current employees.

I'd move if the work/life balance was there.

It would have to be significant enough that the kid said she was on board. Freshman in high school and has grown up with the same friends all her life. Pulling her at this stage would be a huge deal to her.

Wife wouldn't give a shite if it was enough for her to quit teaching.

Anecdotal data is anecdotal, but the neighbor in our office building is a real estate guy. In the last six months he's sold houses to people moving into our BFE parish in Louisiana from Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Utah, none with ties to the area. The Utah guy told him, "people who own land here don't know they're sitting on a gold mine. This area is the next real estate boom." IDK what they see in this place, but we are seeing a little influx of new people.
