Moved and took our jobs with us. Have a small mortgage at 5% now. Regret nothing. We would do it again in a heartbeat. Quality of life is so much better. Now family is considering possible relocation to be near us.

Wait a minute - you could double your current salary and still take 5-7 years of increases to get to $250k? You know this is the OT, right? Nobody here makes less than $350k. Most of us pay our butlers more than that.

To the guy who said it would take +$30k to move to NOLA, you better be making $5k/yr for that increase to make sense.

It would take hundreds of thousands more for me to live there.

I retired last year but my employer had asked me to stay on in a different capacity well before I did, it's a pretty cushy retirement gig but I entertain the occasional offer, mostly unsolicited, some of these are pretty sweet and fortunately at this point money isn't a big issue, it's what the new opportunity is, I'm thinking of making maybe one last move because the opportunities to do some new things are dwindling each year, pretty much boils down to sitting down with the old lady and deciding if we're ready to punch

Prob zero. I’m in an upper executive position at a good company. I have zero desire to be a CEO or anything more than where I’m at. Looking to coast for 5 more years and retire at 50.

We'd have to start at 30% and then see exactly where it is.

This is my exact scenario. It’s a 100k bump with all moving expenses paid but that I just bought a house that is annoying. No kids have fiancé who can pay etc but

100k bump from 65 or 250. 65 I would jump, 250 I'd be hard meh.

I’m not moving so can’t be quantified. Also, I’m my own boss, so I’m not relocating either.
Startup cost.

What % increase in pay would you consider to move across the country?

I don't know if money is worth it. We have all four grandparents that are active in our children's lives that live within a 30 minute drive.

More money is nice, but the life we built here with friends and family is worth more than moving across country for me.

It would have to be in excess of $1.5 million/year for me to consider a move across the country at this point.

furthest tier 1 city.

So like Seattle from Florida? A million dollars a year to deal with that bullshite. Would suck to move from suburban palm beach county to a city in general but especially one full of psychos.

I think this is a serious issue to attracting labor resources nationwide.

Just for it to be a lateral move, the following must occur:
1. Spouse able to transfer/doesn't work/gets new job as well
2. Costs even out- either move to lower cost of living area, or pay is increased for direct housing costs PLUS indirect costs (increased mortgage costs, utility use, taxes, tuition for private schools, etc... maintain existing level of disposable income).
3. Desirable area in which to relocate, with comparable properties to purchase to avoid capital gains taxes.
4. Increased flexibility for at least one parent due to loss of support network.
5. No geographic limitations from non-compete agreements, custody arrangements, etc.

The financial risks are too great to relocate for potential advancement- the increase must be immediate and tangible.

People who think they can draw out of town candidates need a reality check... that will only work if you are located in a lower cost of living area that people in the experience bracket you are targeting wish to move to. Otherwise, prepare to back the truck up, which is going to cause you to match or lose current employees.

I'd move if the work/life balance was there.

IT depends on where and the cost of living, median home price.

20-25% should be most folks MINIMUM ask. If you would be moving to a bigger city, with higher costs.... 30% or more isn't unreasonable.

IF they want you they'll pay it, within reason.

And if there are levels above yours with a reasonable chance you can move up in another 5 years or so - go for it.

It would have to be significant enough that the kid said she was on board. Freshman in high school and has grown up with the same friends all her life. Pulling her at this stage would be a huge deal to her.

Wife wouldn't give a shite if it was enough for her to quit teaching.

If it’s a place I would like to move to, I’d take a pay cut.
At this point, I’d relocate for a klondike bar.

That’s it? There’s no way that I’m moving across the country for 20%

I’d need probably double of what I’m currently making to consider uprooting my family and moving across the company to a job where I have to be in an office every day. And even then it would be a discussion and not an automatic “yes”.

Anecdotal data is anecdotal, but the neighbor in our office building is a real estate guy. In the last six months he's sold houses to people moving into our BFE parish in Louisiana from Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Utah, none with ties to the area. The Utah guy told him, "people who own land here don't know they're sitting on a gold mine. This area is the next real estate boom." IDK what they see in this place, but we are seeing a little influx of new people.
