WHO lists Africa as the region with the highest rate of drowning in the world, with about 8 drownings for every 100,000 people. By comparison, just 1.5 people drown to death for every 100,000 Americans. In Germany it's 0.6.

We talkin about crocodiles and hippos still right? This is in Africa, plus all the other animals that gather and hunt by the water source.

I get how it is easy to criticize over here, but would you learn or teach others how to swim in a lake with crocs or hippos? With lions, hyenas, etc stalking the water for prey when it comes to drink?

I would teach my kids how to swim, yes. You know, so they don't drown.

I would also teach them not to go into croc infested waters. Or disturb territorial bull hippos.

You know, the basics.

you can't swim if you're unconscious.

I don't think it has anything todo with looks, they just don't think they work and are too scared of water to try them out. You have to actually get in the water to test out a life vest, and most of them are too scared to do that.

Given, if there were 16-20 ft crocs in the water routinely I'm not sure how much you can blame their 2nd grade educated selfs on that.

Sometimes I think that man wasn't meant to spend his life in an office, then I remember to enjoy the little things like air conditioning and not having to risk death by crocodile just to get breakfast in the morning.

Sounds like poor equipment is the bigger issue. Lake Victoria is half the size of Louisiana. Depending on where they go in the water it may be too far to swim.

I'd build an indoor pool. Basically build a big hut, dig a big pool sized hole, and fill it with buckets of water from the lake. Then give everyone a swimming lesson in the now safe pool

River monsters did an episode over there. Everything about the water is trying to kill them. Can't learn to swim bc of crocs, boats are shite, nets and lines are a tangled mess, etc

You could teach them to swim and it probably wouldn't help much.

Teaching them that life preservers actually work would be a start.

Canadians are like cats. They like to be around water, but don't like to get in it.

These people have an average IQ of below 70.

The Finest in Sub-Saharan science on display.

They just don't have the mental facilities to process higher order thinking for the most part.

I'm sure all of those people over there have so much money that they could afford a luxury such as a life preserver for every person who goes out to or near water. That just makes total sense.

Sounds like they can't afford common sense.
