A few years ago, it was estimated that a medium soda costs McDonalds up to $0.11 each between the ice, soda, cup, straw, lid, and labor. They charge about $1.00 for each. Soda is some of the highest margin products sold by the fast food giant.

Not the Bee

McDonald's is transitioning away from self-serve beverage stations and some locations may start to charge for refills that were once free.

The fast food giant will slowly remove self-serve beverage stations - fountain drink dispensers - and be completely rid of the stations by 2032.

On the bright side, this will help them control the cleanliness of the fountain like Chick Fil A. But my local McDonalds is pretty filthy behind the counter.

Chic fil a does this but it’s to keep everything clean. And they don’t charge for refills.

Charging for refills on fountain drinks is complete bullshite.

Anyway...

Needing a refill from a fast food restaurant is a huge indictment of yourself.

Great, just what I wanted.. more interaction with the people who work at McDonalds. They're always so friendly and helpful. I don't eat there often, but this is an additional reason to eat somewhere else.

It's their pleasure to refill it too. It won't be the case at most McDonalds.

From a work flow perspective, McDonalds will need that much more productive of an employee to handle these refills along with their normal responsibilities. They'll need to find better people, manage the restaurants competently, or hire more people (all of which Chick Fil A does).

My experience is once the cashier has handed you the order, they're done with you and seem to hide when you want a refill.

They also have a more simplified menu to streamline their production, better management, and usually better employees.

I'm wondering if McDonalds thinks the additional charges for refills can justify more manpower or if they are trying to actively discourage people from using the dining room and focus more on drive thru business. I've noticed that their dining rooms are less inviting, smaller, and dirtier than they used to be.

Haven't eaten McDonald's in probably 20 years. There is no reason to buy that garbage when there are much better fast food options available for a dollar or two more.

Good. Make people pay more for wanting to be fat.

McDonald's is clearly moving away from "eat in" business. Most McDonald's are not that good at keeping the dining room area maintained anyway.

I'm surprised they're still in business. Food is bad. Too expensive. Customer service is awful. How do they survive?

With the ever-increasing price of fast food these days you might as well go eat at a decent restaurant. And most of those don't charge for refills.

I bet it also discourages a lot of people from getting refills. Especially the refill when people are leaving and don't really want anymore drink but its right there so why not?

It's been a few yrs since I ate inside and got a drink but the language a McD's operator used to explain the move is straight from a Dilbert strip.

“It’s an evolution towards convenience and (the result of) the growth of digital service," huh? somebody please translate.

Good luck getting McDonald's people to pay for refills

There will be some amusing, but violent, videos over all this. Rest assured
