The Mrs. and I were shopping for a Tahoe yesterday and were quoted an extra 5K over MRSP for "market conditions".

The whole story told in three graphics.

We just bought a Honda Pilot for MSRP. Negotiated the $3500 market adjustment off, then got another $1000 added to our old car's value. I knew going in that I was going to pay more, but the used car value spike offsets this.

My Pathfinder was 10 years old, high miles (170K) but in great shape, hoped to keep it for another year or two. Had my eye on several possible replacement models, looking at price, appearance, and tow capacity (I have a boat).
But the Friday before Ida, I was in an accident and totaled it, which forced my hand.
While we were evacuated, went and looked at a few cars. The newly redone Pathfinders were a strong possibility-- until I went to the dealer and saw that same $5000 upcharge due to "market availability". They barely had any on the lot, too.
Wound up getting the same thing I had rented for the evacuation (sort of an extended test drive), a 2021 Explorer.
I found the particular one I wanted via an online search, and when I went to the dealer to check it out the one with the same stock/VIN number had literally just come off the delivery truck, still wrapped in plastic inside and out.
I got them down $5,000 from what they originally wanted to charge me, and got it for less than MSRP. Would've been even less if I would have had my old car to trade-in, due to some special offer, but whatever.

Trading in a 4 yr old truck with 85k miles for 7k less than I paid for it, and its not a Toyota today. It's insane

went to buy a Santa Fe, they wanted 8% above MSRP

Everyone I know is paying above MSRP for new cars. Most are getting a premium on trade ins, so it may be a wash.

Chip shortages have a lot to do with this. Low inventory equals higher pricing.

It’s a wash but you still can’t find trucks to buy. If I’m spending 55k on a truck, I’m getting exactly what I want, and that’s not gonna happen unless you special order. Particularly for Ford trucks which have a million different configurations and options, they have people still waiting on trucks they ordered back in March. It’s actually so backed up that they’re converting 2021 vins into 2022s.
I bought a used 2016 loaded out for about 15k under what the same package with same miles would cost me today.

Fixing the chip issue will probably also help fix the used car market some.

Yes. Bought the Mrs. a 2021 BMW X7. $100k+ car and not one nickel off.
They did give me a little more on our trade-in, but only like $500.

If you have a trade in then add an extra 5k to the trade value for "market conditions".

I got a new Bronco at invoice(!) last week but only because I negotiated everything bank in January when we were waiting for the thing to be built.
Dealer did try to walk that back, but I had the price signed by the manager on the offer sheet so no takesie backsies.
On the other hand, I have heard tales of others w/ Bronco reservations who did not lock in a price and the dealer just hits them w/ a 10k markup at the end of their 1.5 year wait. Brutal.

Thousands of car dealers in the USA that are reachable in a day via a flight. No way zero chance I am paying MSRP for any vehicle. There are deals out there to be had if you are willing to put a little work in.

wouldn't buy a vehicle right now unless I had to. I'd wait for the market to settle back into normal conditions.
My parents just ordered a new Toyota. No telling how much they paid. And my mom's current car is fine.

Honda marking up MSRP about $1,500+ with that bullshite paint sealant scam.
How in the freak are there no cars on any of the dealership lots? Like a handful at most.

Bought brand new Tacoma TRD and the dealership has already offered me more than what I paid for it. There is not anything around and I love my truck so I am keeping it. Weird times we living in boys.
ETA: purchased in June...offer from dealership was last month.
