COVINGTON, La. -- A 17-year-old from Mandeville was found dead in a flooded ditch in Covington, possibly from a overdose of synthetic marijuana.

According to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office, Alexander James Shelby was found dead in Columbia Street Landing Covington around 11 p.m. Sunday.

"Alexander James Shelby and a friend had apparently been using illegal drugs and both blacked out. When the friend awakened, Shelby was face-down in a flooded ditch. An autopsy is pending and a cause of death has not yet been determined," said a statement from the coroner.

Stuff is fricking horrible, more needs to be done to make teens aware how bad synthetic weed out there is

Or they could just make actual weed legally available.

not sure that would readily fix this situation. weed still wouldn't be legal for teens if was legal.

That stuff is really terrible. They need to just go ahead and legalize weed everywhere so we can get rid of this stuff.

To even call or label that bullshite "weed" or have the words "cannabis" or "marijuana" in its description is in its self a problem.

In the newspapers you can sometimes read how people are arrested for "synthetic marijuana". It should be more like "pesticides on plant matter".

Don't they just keep changing the formula to get around bans? So that the current stuff is completely different than the stuff that came out some years ago?

ignorance perception of the drug is just that ignorance. i'm surprised more kids aren't dying. i've known of a few first hand instincances where the child was more than fortunate. One kid was left by his friends, similar situation, face down in a ditch. He told his family in the hospital after he was rescued that the only thing that kept him alive was he thought an angel put a straw through the mud for him to breathe.

Who fricking knows what is in that stuff really? It's gotta be all kind of toxic chemicals, based off of reaction to it.

That's the thing though, alcohol isn't sold to teens yet they still can find it. This is also the same with prescription meds sitting in a cabinet.

At least with REAL marijuana, you won't have deaths and physical addiction caused by the "drug" alone.

The market for synthetic weed would disappear overnight.

Or it would be reduced to a trash drug, like meth.

Synthetic is pretty trashy as it already is.

Did his death have anything to do with the ditch being flooded?

I truly believe Louisiana's profits would be at least double that of Colorado's.

Especially if louisiana were the only cannabis legal state in the gulf region.
