A carjacking suspect who was being pursued by police jumped from the Causeway Bridge on Wednesday after he ran out of gas, briefly closing the bridge’s southbound lanes, according to Carlton Dufrechou, the Causeway’s general manager.

The man was pulled from the water using a rescue basket about 30 minutes after he jumped, Dufrechou said. He was transported to a hospital on the south shore and, according to Dufrechou, and did not have any apparent injuries.

At around 10:26 a.m., Mandeville police responded to a reported incident at the Discount Zone gas station on the corner of La. 22 and West Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville, according to Sgt. Timothy McJunkin of the Mandeville Police Department.

McJunkin said the suspect pulled up to the gas station in a white pickup truck and attempted to steal a vehicle from a person pumping gas nearby. The vehicle’s owner fought back and the suspect fled in the truck towards the Causeway Bridge.

The white pickup truck was reported as stolen from Ascension Parish, McJunkin said.

During the pursuit, the man ran out of fuel while driving southbound on the Causeway, breaking down around mile marker 10, Dufrechou said. When Causeway police approached, the suspect jumped off the bridge into the lake.

Should've left him and seen if he could in fact swim to shore.

You definitely don't expect to see carjackings in Mandeville. What a fricking idiot.

If he's prosecuted in St Tammany he might get a death sentence

Maybe twelve years ago. Not with the current crop of jokers...er, I mean judges, that we have now. He'll get three years probation and behavioral health court.

I will never understand committing a crime then trying to take the causeway. Your options are to jump or get your arse beat by the cops waiting at either end.

Retard. Carjacking a car that has no gas in it to get away.

And yes I realize the story says he jumped into the truck he was driving to get away, but he was probably on E in the truck too.

Carjacking at a gas station is a gamble, you either get a full tank or an empty one

Seems like every police car on the Causeway would have one of those rope ladders you hook to the side of the bridge that would reach down to the water. Like the ones in a house to hook to a window when there is a fire. Just drop the ladder down and let the dude climb his arse up.

That is like doing something bad on the road to Grand Isle or Venice. There is no magic turn that takes you out of the eyes of the police.

Unless you can beat them to a dock and have a fast getaway speed boat. Then you will have Water patrol or wildlife and fisheries on your tail and coast guard helicopter enroute.
