We didn't have a blockbuster for a while but there was a mom/pop video rental place. And if you needed to rent a vcr, the local Kroger rented them. We had a vcr, but to copy the rental movies mom would always rent a VCP from Kroger and you wire it through the VCR to the TV, and record it on the blank tape as it plays. Problem was if you pause or rewind, that's also what gets coded onto the bootleg. We had ever Disney, star wars, jaws, etc. FBI never found out.

I also remember one of the video rental joints in our town had a separate room that had a sign on the door saying “MUST BE 18 TO ENTER”. That’s where they kept the XXX movies.

Man going to Blockbuster on Friday night getting an R rated movie because my Grandma didn't know what Child's Play was. Ahh to be a kid again.
Pretending to be asleep on my buddies couch watching Eyes Wide Shut when his dad walked in. “Is this some kind of doctor movie?” He asked and then walked out.

Brother you better check out your window now. I believe there is a black van parked across the street.

We had a small mom and pop video rental called Bayouside video. Buddies and I would ride our bike across the one lane bridge across the bayou and go rent games/movies. Was awesome to go to friends houses in town and go to an actual blockbuster.

We actually paid for our first VCR in installments. Circa 1981.
I did this, too. Sears was known for giving credit to college kids with no visible means of support so it was my first credit card. I bought a VCR for around $200, made installment payments for a few months and then paid off the balance. That activity looked great on the credit report.
As far as Blockbuster, I interviewed for a job at their corporate HQ but didn’t get an offer. I was bummed out because movie stars would show up occasionally and it sounded like a fun place to work.
And I still have my Blockbuster card!

No greater feeling of accomplishment as a dad, than Friday nights walking through the door with pizza and a VHS of the sought after new release of the weekend.

I worked at, and eventually managed, a Blockbuster for years. It was the best/worst job I ever had.
By the way, blockbuster.com recently came live again. But its only one page that says
This is what their website looked like previously

Not sure what that means. But if they're opening stores again, I may have to apply.

rented out all their VCRs
Our VCR broke around 1987 or so and we couldn't afford to buy a new one. We would rent a VCR every Friday for $20 at Curtis Mathes in Crowley along with about 5-6 movies. So, in a year's time frame, we paid over $1000 in renting a VCR when we could have saved $200 or so for a brand new one.

As kids, we were so happy when Blockbuster opened in town.. since we couldn't rent at the local mom n pop store as my older brother forgot to return Eddie Murphy Raw (under the seat in his car) tape. 9 months late and they tried to charge us $99 for the late return.

I watched that documentary about the last Blockbuster several months back, and when they mentioned the smell of a Blockbuster, my mind immediately recalled the smell.
Im not sure what caused the smell-if it was the plastic cases or some specific cleaner they used or what. But I can only describe the smell as "smelling like a Blockbuster store".

I can't believe some major studio doesn't buy the Blockbuster name and turn it into a streaming platform.

Oh crap, I hope they don't come at me for those late fees.

A few months before I left, we had a meeting with some big wigs in Blockbuster Corporate. Someone asked an executive "What do you think the future of watching movies at home will be, and how do you feel about streaming movies on the internet?"
The executive dead arse said "We've looked into online movie streaming, but we feel that the internet will never be fast enough for at home streaming. The buffer times will be too long."
Yikes.

Dang, that brings back memories-- one of the first things I bought in grad school after getting my first credit card (may have even been a store credit card) was a VCR. The VCR paid off in cheap Friday or Saturday night entertainment with my girlfriend at the time; we were living together in Atlanta miles from home in Louisiana; we'd get a Blockbuster (or local store) video, a bottle of white zinfandel/"blush" wine, and make popcorn (pre-microwave popcorn days) sprinkled with Cajun spice.
Then after the movie....
Then after the movie....
