Both can be true. It's not hard to make the case that in terms of state government FL is many times better, smarter, more efficient, more capable, and less wasteful than CA.

Carolla said on his podcast that these were the strongest he’s experienced and he has been in LA and the hills his whole life.

Corolla is a little older than me, but we're from the same area, and I've been here my whole life as well.

I'm almost certain these are the strongest winds I've ever experienced, and I really can't recollect anything close.

Can this really be argued after what we have seen the last couple of days?
We may have seen pinnacle incompetence from this leadership.

Well they could not fly planes because of the wind… liberal or not you can’t blame anyone for that. Nice try.

Does know where there is an approximate map of the burned areas that the media is tracking?

Well, the argument will be that they should have been better prepared.

We’re only a page away from people complaining CA is over regulated to the point they require double hulled pools.

This will be an example that when you try to protect yourself from everything you protect yourself from nothing.

Is this really a thing? We have hurricane hunters that fly into hurricanes. I'd be interested in why we can do one but not the other (sincerely)

Different planes, different functions, different weather. Out over the open ocean there are no mountains to influence wind and possibly crash into. Tanker planes also fly low to get water with already slim margins for error. Helicopters have similar issues to deal with.

There’s a huge difference in risk profile flying at relatively high altitude over the GoA vs under 1000 feet in hilly neighborhoods.

Look at how much we bitch about FEMA in all these threads. Now imagine that they're all armed units with authority to shoot in certain circumstances.

We already have the National Guard, Coast Guard, and the Air Force does interior search and rescue and so far so good. And I said get rid of FEMA.
Understood, and we need resources.

But most of the FEMA complaints stem from fedgov outsiders coming in, taking over, and getting in the way of locals, who may understand the actual issues better but lack the resources to do what's necessary.
A military branch replacing FEMA would be the same complaint, with the added concern that it's under Pentagon control.

It's probably what FEMA should have been in the first place, but I could see the rationale for keeping it as civilian and toothless as possible (from public perception concerns).

You cannot wait for the disaster to happen before you respond. This is not an unforeseen event unfolding before our eyes.

You need to always be prepared, especially if your disaster is seasonal.

Like everything else, California gets a pass on the basic leadership qualities of preparation and initiative. It is in fact, the winds fault all of this happened and lack of preparation did not create further damage.

Got it.

Ugh. The wind is what made this so bad. They don't need this at all. Up in Tahoe there was a gust measured at 206 mph earlier this week. The Sierras don't play around. Thank God SoCal isn't getting that.
