The now vacant lots will revert to the state, which will convert that stretch of seashore to surfer access, and less than 2 week stay parking for motor homes and tents.

Yeah, whenever these fires get big enough the help comes in. These fires weren't particularly large by our standards but because it was in such a densely populated area it warranted that help. Had the winds not been as bad as they were I don't think this would've amounted to much. Not having the air assets was a huge loss.

Just an FYI for you: You're arguing over how much of a difference no rain is vs something like .05" of rain since May of 2024. It has been very very dry this year for LA

Also, the winds this year were much stronger than normal.

I read something that only 2011 and 2003 had comparable wind.

Good.

I hadn’t seen any reference to that.

Most wildland and hotshot crews have gone off duty for the offseason. Getting them mobilized takes time, even for the California based crews. They were getting shite together as they were fighting the fire the other night. Out of state help would take longer to get in the fold. This a terribly timed fire, especially with where it took off.

How does this happen in a 50% Hispanic county? If I was told to name the top 3 Hispanic stereotypes, I'd say hard working, fertile women, and love working on cars.

Not all help is in the form of water. You can get bulldozers to clear areas. Crews can come in and burn areas to get ahead of the fire thereby cutting off additional fuel sources. They can be planes coming in to help dump retardants and so on.

Ok. That’s good. Stay safe out there. The pics I’ve seen are just devastating.

Extra air resources would help a lot.

surely most are owned by people that can afford to rebuild but there is got to be a handful of people who got their dream home. Dumped their life savings into it and are now left holding the bag

The rebuild costs will be much lower than what the houses were valued at. They were worth $10-20M based on location but materials would be a fraction.

Carolla said on his podcast that these were the strongest he’s experienced and he has been in LA and the hills his whole life.

I saw a graphic where there was a large low pressure system over the Rockies and then a big high pressure system off shore, with the LA area directly in between resulting in the extreme winds. Similar setup to the Maui fire as there was a hurricane and another system interacting resulting in high pressure gradient and very high winds.

There is an entire disaster relief collective that spans from Texas to FL in the Southeast. It is a massive cooperative effort between state governments and entities. Does that not exist out west?

When I was in the Coast Guard I came to the conclusion that there needs to be an armed service that would go into situations like wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc… and provide assistance to National Guard and state services or take charge in suppression, evacuation, relief efforts, sheltering, and rebuilds.

Get rid of FEMA and give me that branch.

Oh, where I am is perfectly safe from this. We've got a couple hundred miles in-between us. But I love SoCal and seeing this just sucks. We've got family in Calabasas which is a little northwest of Malibu and friends in a few cities down there but not close to the fires.

Sounds good in theory...
reality, not so much.

Look at how much we bitch about FEMA in all these threads. Now imagine that they're all armed units with authority to shoot in certain circumstances.

We already have the National Guard, Coast Guard, and the Air Force does interior search and rescue and so far so good. And I said get rid of FEMA.
