Not that I've bought a product from Lululemon, but they should be boycotted. They've proven that they'll flagrantly allow criminality, then pass the loss off to their law-abiding customers.

Box stores fire employees for stopping thieves all the time. It is cheaper to absorb the shoplifting theft than to settle the lawsuits from "bad" stops.
The real retail theft is done by employees. I have seen Cashiers steal tens of thousands of dollars by skimming gift cards and seen multiple rings of cashiers under ringing for their accomplices costing tens to thousands to hundreds of thousands.
The loss at self checkout from people stealing is probably peanuts compared to what people were doing.

Retail stores generally write off theft on their taxes.

Well that's dumb. Let's let them finish robbing the bank because we need to complete our paperwork first
Let's not compare a bank to $75.63 worth of t-shirts. The police are always contacted by asset protection, once they have everything squared away. Whats the officer going to do 5 mins after they leave? Nothing. Its a waste of time. One overzealous employee wrongfully calling the cops on someone NOT stealing and you have yourself a $2 million dollar lawsuit. Over $75.63. Like I said, this a rule directly from the legal depts of these stores, for good reason. Also, calling 911 on a store phone disables the phone system for hours.

This is all accurate. Internal theft is like 70% of avg shrink for big box retailers. People don't realize that most people stealing significant amounts from stores are caught within a couple weeks. You don't need people to stop them, send in the info and let the police do their jobs.

Was it in their policy not to confront or follow thieves out of the building? Most companies have this policy. It's to protect against lawsuits that are significantly more expensive than a bunch of t-shirts, that cost 3 dollars to make. My point is, either you side with a private businesses right to run their business, or you don't.
You can agree with business rights and also think this is asinine.
Reading your posts, you sound like a lawyer so it makes sense you'd like corporate policy over common sense.

He's a POS. Lululemon could've done training with these women instead of firing them.

I used to work with someone for five years that works in DevOps for Lululemon Corporate now. The company is mega woke.

Shrink is not based on retail value, it's based on cost.

I think that's the default setting now although some are worse than others.

Did I ever say they should be fired? I actually think they should have been talked to, explained why it was dumb, and left at that. I chased many a criminal in my day, and fricking hate thieves, that doesn't change the logic behind why I agree with their policies. Retail employees shouldn't be responsible for chasing and capturing thieves, its not worth it.

Common sense would be NOT losing tens/hundreds of millions of dollars in lawsuits. I'm not a lawyer, but these policies are made by the legal divisions of each of these companies, because they will lose a shite ton of money... All of them have the same policies, but I'm sure you and your "common sense" know much better.

Should be legal to shoot thieves on site

But they’re doing it because they don’t want it known that folks are stealing shite left and right to protect their “brand”.
Or to reduce their tax liability. I wonder how the IRS feels about assisting people to steal your merchandise that reduces the government's piece of the pie.
