LSU radio station?

Does LSU still have a radio station? I would listen to WPRG / KLSU in the early '80s. It was so great to listen to music other than Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers singing Islands in the Stream, or anything Lionel Ritchie. Heard many songs before they started getting played on Mtv.

It's still KLSU. It's on 91.1 in BTR. It live streams at https://lsureveille.com/klsu/

My guess is now hours of commercial free hip hop and rap.

Why did "The 1975 - Robbers" get played 3 times in less than 90 minutes?

Anyone who went to BRHS remember Danny Dean, the guy who ran WBRH/KBRH and taught radio broadcasting? He had an absolute hatred of KLSU. He ranted that the station was garbage and hoped that none of his radio students ended up there. I think he has passed away. Bit of a strange duck, but he was okay.

ETA: KLSU uses short music snippets in and out of their talk breaks. Listened to the break just now; that's what the playlist service is picking up.

Do they still have Underground Sounds on Monday nights?

KLSU was banging in the early to mid 90's. Then I guess those students graduated and it never has been good again

I sometimes stream it on a Yamaha receiver through the Net Radio function. Sometimes there is something interesting.
I had several shows on KLSU back in the mid 80s. All overnight slots. Good times. My kids have been annoyed for years by me sometimes cuing a song in the middle of a vinyl record at home before letting it spin.

When did it leave the 4 songs then give the names to a top40 radio format? It was the alternative station in the 80's.

We would always say what we played or what we were about to play. When I was there the station was still in West Stadium Dorm. For one year there I lived in South Stadium so I was always on call if someone needed a late night or overnight fill.
One of my offspring got a show on a college radio station on the west coast and they were streaming only. Since they weren't broadcast over air, they pretty much had no rules. While we had to flash out known curse words, etc., they said whatever they wanted and played whatever they wanted. To me it was glorious.
Unfrotunately, KLSU seems less free these days.

I assume it is still student staffed. Knew a girl that DJ'd. They would take requests. The students didn't know all of the songs and were just grabbing albums, look for that track and play it. Every once in a while they would get in trouble by playing something that would contain words that could not be said on the air.
They wouldn't play anything in the top 40 which was good, but every so often a good song they would start playing would make it and then you wouldn't hear it again.

I've been trying for years to find anyone else who remembers my favorite KLSU show from the early 1990s.
It started at midnight on Saturdays or Sundays and featured unusual music "unfit for general consumption." (I think that was the catchphrase.)
But even people who worked there around that time don't seem to remember it at all.

quote:May have heard one of your shows. I was at LSU 1983 to 1986 (right after it went from being WPRG to KLSU; they couldn't get WLSU because it was already taken by University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse)
I had several shows on KLSU back in the mid 80s.
Used to love listening to KLSU at that time. Was introduced to many new wave artists via that station: The Cult, Cocteau Twins, Dominatrix, Book of Love, etc.
About 15-20 years ago when I would go up to Baton Rouge for meetings at LADOTD, I'd put the station on in my car, and when I started driving home, I'd call them up and request songs from back in my college days: Echo and the Bunnymen, REM, Let's Active, The Three O' Clock, etc.
And within the next song or two THEY WOULD PLAY THEM! Made an old man happy.

From the top of the tower to the depth of your soul, it’s 3:00 o'clock and time to rock!

Many of my closest friends were DJs on KLSU during the entire 1980s. Good times indeed. Cheers to you!
