re: I feel like praising John Williams right now...

One of his most interesting soundtracks is The Long Goodbye. You hear the same theme in different styles in different scenes.
The movie is good, too. Crime drama.

Mockingbird is a favorite of mine.

I read somewhere that this is harder than the first Hollow Knight, but it's cheap enough that I'm going to go for it regardless.

re: Shin Godzilla is getting an ORTHOchromatic (B&W) release in addition to color
Posted by slough on 8/22/25 at 10:46 am to SpartanSoul
I saw Godzilla Minus One only in black and white and I thought it worked very well that way. I probably would have bought the physical release by now if it included both and not only the color version, but I do want to see it in color eventually.
Shin Godzilla had great monster scenes but I found the talking parts boring and there were too many of them.

I would recommend the book The Thin Red Line to anyone who liked the movie and also to anyone who didn't.
It's totally different in tone, visceral and focused instead of the way the movie goes kind of dreamlike at times. And the violence is more intense.

If they are only a few weeks old and not yet weaned, you should probably wait before taking one. I don't know the ideal timing but I think you get better behavior if you don't grab them too young.

I recommend Gerber chicken baby food (the puree kind) to lure a kitten. You can grab it while it's eating.
It will be very scared for a while after, though, probably even too scared to eat. But once it calms down you can start holding it and getting it used to you.

I found the movie entertaining but probably the weakest of the three.

Yes, this part immediately struck me as strange. It isn't even clear whether they did the second time they had a chance, but I assumed they must have.
Editing to add that my issue with the very last scene wasn't as much that it didn't exactly fit with the rest of the film--I can accept that there are weird characters roaming around, even ones that act cartoonishly. But they seemed so careless given how easily you can get infected, not to mention how hard it must be to keep your clothes clean.

If you look closely at the elephant when it gets going, there are 5-6 other animals in there.
Overture (the DLC) is great.
It's pretty tough if you play it on NG+, even if you lower the difficulty with the new settings.

I also wish they'd picked Silent Hill 4 instead. I think the simple graphics made the first game more unnerving than it would be if it was more realistic.
But at least with modern technology they can make the school look just like the one in Kindergarten Cop now.

That interview with the writers was good.

I would recommend SOMA if you haven't tried it. I think it's their best game. The third Amnesia game is, good, too. Haven't tried the fourth one yet (The Bunker).
Some other fun little indie horror games:

Anthology of the Killer LINK (looks cartoonish but it's clever)
re: Has anyone had any luck getting older PC games (mid 90s to mid 2000s) to work on a modern
Posted by slough on 6/5/25 at 4:25 pm to GetPiggywithIt
Easiest way is to get the game from gog.com ( LINK if it's one they have. They have tons of old games packaged to work on modern systems.
If you don't like the idea of paying again for a game you bought in the distant past, they have big discounts all the time and the older games often go for next to nothing.

It pales in comparison to The Raid and has too much talking but still worth seeing for the action scenes.

This was also my experience. It struck me as a show that might keep you guessing but just because of its random, convoluted story and not anything particularly clever.
But since then I keep hearing it recommended and I've considered giving it another chance.
The comic version of Nausicaa is very much worth reading.

It's one of my favorites, but you have to like or at least tolerate a lot of strangeness without a traditional narrative structure.

I would recommend playing Tetris Attack before selling it. It's one of my old favorite 2-player games.
