Seems likely that this kind of policy would increase the numbers of people who run from the police. It is possible it would actually increase the risk to the public.
This is EXACTLY the problem. If a strict "no-pursuit" policy is put in place, then criminals will quit putting license plates on their cars and run EVERY SINGLE TIME an officer trys to pull them over. Think I am being melodramatic?
Look no further than the multiple threads about the ATV and dirt bike groups riding through the streets of NOLA on a regular basis. Guess what the NOPD policy is on these groups? No pursuit under any circumstances.

And at 35K per year you are asking a police officer to make a snap decision that could mean life or death. Not an easy decision.
What's the point you're trying to make here?

I hope the streets of NOLA look like Ho Chi Minh City except with wheelie riding dirtbikes and 4 wheelers, not mopeds.

Would 100k make the decision any easier?

I see this every day around the city. I also see young kids bopping around in the back seat with no seat belt quite often. The outcome of this situation is terrible, but not shocking.

People have no idea how dangerous a policy like NOPD's, of 10-22/canceling every chase, really is. I'm part of the task force that has to go round these individuals up if they're able to be identified and located. Having to hit a house of one of these guys is extremely dangerous, placing the lives of not only the units going inside at risk, but also every civilian in the house and in the nearby houses. It is much, much safer statistically to pursue a vehicle (within reason) and take the target when he isn't in his comfort zone and we control the environment and timing.

And in a city like Nola, the odds are very high than a car thief or someone wanting to run from the police likely has a warrant out for them and a long list of priors, so getting these guys off the street is worth the risk in most situations that would involve a chase.

Don't bring your first hand experience and facts up in here, sir.

The people who believe he was running because he was in a stolen car are delusional. The gun on a convicted felon is 10 years alone. And does anyone believe even that's why he ran?

Was the baby stolen too?
Don't worry, still police fault.

The windows were too heavily tinted to see in.
I know you are being sarcastic though.

This should do wonders for Half Moon's presidential prospects.

Original owner is at fault for having tint and recklessly disregarding the possibility that a criminal would steal the car and go on a high speed chase with a child in the car.

I'm not sure where the 35k is coming from but state police make a good living. 50k after year one and top out at 140k without ot.

No, I work with one of one of the task forces.
