Trial and error and reading info from people smarter on the subject than I am, brother. Such as guys like yourself

If you're the smartest guy in the room, then you're in the wrong freaking room.

So, the majority of human evolution was based around a diet of eating animals and plants (vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc.), which means that our digestive system is designed around those types of foods (low carb)

While largely true, this gets a little too much play. There are plenty of ancestral cultures that eat the shite out of some tubers and subsist on a significant amount of carbs. You better believe that primitive diets would have seasonally relied on tubers/roots/berries as well. Net carbs would be significantly lower than modern diets, though.

The main takeaway should be that humans are pretty flexible. Everyone should start with an isocaloric diet and then play to see what works best.

I lost 11 lbs in 6 days on Atkins, the bad part is once you reintroduce carbs it seems like weight comes back even quicker.

Well...10 lbs of it is depleted glycogen. That's why you "gain it back" overnight. It is all water weight initially.

It certainly can work if you can dedicate yourself to it and have some willpower.

Cut out most sugars and starches, and you'll see a difference. Don't go no carb, go low carb.

Meat, fruit, veggies, some dairy. If you can do that, you should see a difference. Of course, adding in exercise will help that much more.

1800 calories a day and 20-30 minutes of cardio. Works the best for me.

If you eat one or two hours before, you'll be ok. You can even add fat to slow digestion. Why you want to go hypo while you're lifting? They have designer carbs(ie cyclic dextrin) to be used while you workout because of the fast rate of gastric emptying if you're that worried.

I guess calories in versus out is no longer accurate

this is why you are getting downvoted. This maybe what works for you, but 1800 calories is a blanket statement.

My question is what are your macro percentages? Protein/fat/carbs

take that same calorie intake drop your carb percentage 10-20% and spread it over the protein and fat and I can almost guarantee you will have even better results.

Since when did body weight become the only health concern?

With all calories being equal (as some suggest), sure, 1800 calories of twinkies might produce the same bodyweight as a given diet, but what would the bloodwork say?

All I know is that my blood pressure is great and I sleep better when I eat at a deficit. 1800 calories is a good amount for a 35 year old male.

Yeah 1800 calories a day ain't gonna help a woman lose weight.

I love my carbs wayyy too much to ever go low carb. I could likely do it long enough to lose weight from it...but don't think I could maintain it as a lifestyle.

So for me...I need to find another way to pursue weight loss/healthier lifestyle. One that I can actually maintain.

Sure it'll help a woman lose weight. Along with proper hydration and burning 400-600 calories per day, why wouldn't it?

Started exclusively cooking with whole wheat pasta at home, and really don't notice the difference.

Brown rice works with a lot of dishes, but the longer cooking time is a major draw back.

But they're so good. I'm still a pack a week. My cardiologist said a "smoker" is 5 or more cigarettes per day. Pack a week will eventually kill me, but not as fast

Smart to know yourself. If it aint sustainable, don't even try it.

So, then you need to cut fat. Fat/Carbs are a sliding scale. You can do high fat or high carb, just not both.

I'll still maintain that everyone should start 33/33/33 and finds what works best.

I try to make healthier choices regarding carbs as well whenever I can (wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, etc). Look at sugar content, etc.

I admit I focus more on calories though(I aim for 1300-1500 calories a day and am trying to work out 4-5 times a week).

1000-1200 is "weight loss" territory for the average not-active woman.

There's a calculator online based on height/weight/age and how much you work out.

Mine:

quote:

Maintain Weight: 1407
Lose Weight: 1126
Lose Weight Fast: 1000

I start a 1000-calorie delivered/prepared meal program next Monday.
