Hate the damned things, but for the first time ever they have been loitering around (and dying en masse) on my back patio.

They have been in my back yard before, but rarely have any been around my patio doors/windows and never in the numbers this go around.

What's really weird is I am not seeing them in my front yard/driveway/porch at all.

frick love bugs.

We will now return you to your regular programming.

When I get to heaven I am going to ask God why he put love bugs, mosquitos and fire ants on earth.

Love bugs had a mass casualty event around my front door. The ground in front is covered in dead love bugs. And I had cleaned them out last week

He will probably refer you to the supervisor of the Hell division.

They've been doing weird stuff forever. When I had an apartment at LSU, I left a window open all day. Came home and there were thousands of them on my bed. Some alive, most dead.

He will probably tell you soil health, food, and pollination.

From Gemini

Exhaustion & Natural Lifespan (3–5 Days): Adult lovebugs do not live long. After emerging from soil as pupae, males swarm to mate and die shortly after within 2 to 3 days. Females lay up to 350 eggs in moist thatch or leaf litter and die shortly after. Because millions emerge simultaneously during a brood peak, millions naturally die within the exact same 48-to-72-hour window.

Desiccation (Dehydration): Lovebugs are extremely sensitive to low humidity and direct heat. While they prefer warm weather, ambient temperatures above 90°F with low humidity will dry them out rapidly. Swarms caught on hot pavement, light-colored walls, or metal surfaces quickly succumb to heat stress and drop together.

Trapped by Artificial Light & Heat Signals: Lovebugs are diurnal (active during the day) and drawn to heat and UV light. At dusk, large clusters often land on warm light fixtures, hot engine blocks, or light-colored building soffits. Once trapped in stagnant air or against hot surfaces, whole groups collapse in the same spot overnight

My property is covered with dead lovebugs and I’ve been clearing them with a leaf blower for a few days. Thought it was just me.

They're itty bitty teeny weeny things. They got the whole world shook up for some reason.

Without wasps our entire agricultural system would very likely collapse.

They are doing weird shite this year. Instead of flying around, spread out, they have all congregated on one side of my house, even on the windows. This happens to be the shady side so I'm thinking they are looking for moisture.

Showed up here for the first time yesterday, and the numbers are small. Surely hope it stays that way and they are gone quickly.

Then why are they so attracted to white?
