Say what you will about her bid for Governor, but Sharon Hewitt is to thank for this. She brought this bill and the math bill through the legislature.

Why would they have even stopped teaching phonics? That's how I learned to read and was taught that in elementary school for several grades. It was actually a course that was taught. I wanna say it was Reading/Phonics.

Maybe we should do the same for math.

This new math is retarded. Adding & subtracting 3+ digit numbers horizontally will never make sense to me.

fricking terrible. I get that some kids can learn this way but the problem is forcing every kid to learn it the "new" way. Talk about frustration at the dinner table trying to teach a kid 5th grade math. I had tears, and she had tears. I HATE new math.

Phonics was a tried and true method of learning to read. Why they ever moved away from it was ridiculous. My kids went to a private school that used it. Now my grandkids go. They all learn to read. It’s impressive to see 4 yr olds begin to sound out words, read signs while driving. Also, when the “new” method didn’t work guess how they taught them? Phonics.

The change from past methods was all because of bureaucrats needing to justify their jobs by changing something that was already working just for the sake of change.

The ironic thing is that these same bureaucrats themselves learned how to read using the same systems that they replaced.

Can’t get paid by selling last year’s curriculum. You have to shift the paradigm every decade or so to make the big bucks

Wish the article gave some context and not just the money talks.

Without any real details on the 'what' in the article, I can only assume it is not talking about 'dibels', as that thing is utter trash. The 'dibels' crap they have going now to measure students should have stayed in Oregon. This assessment is done on the computer with a teacher on a tablet where students are to read and scroll as fast as they can while the teacher marks it as accurate or not (teacher's choice on allowing them to continue on an inaccurate word or stay on it until it is correct). Sounds simple enough until you see your school system's consensus strongest readers barely met their words per minute mark in this 'accessment' yet the kids who's reading sounds like an 80s rap solo are 'exceling'...

The worst of it is the new overall ciriculum Louisiana is recommending to schools from 3rd-8th grade as of this year, ie. 'Bayou Bridges' - a leftist trashcan developed by a non-profit cesspool in Virgina iirc. Per thier site:

LINK /

quote:

Excellence and Equity in Education
...
shrink the fairness gap between the academic achievement of American students living in poverty and that of their economically advantaged peers

You can download the ciriculuum for free from their site or the bayou bridges site itself. Some highlights are:

1. Learn the pilliars of Islam and all about the life of Muhammed.
2. Learn about the Ghani tribe that had no impact on anyone, anywhere but there.
3. Praise abound for big government efforts.

And the list goes on. Go figure, as of the start of this year, Louisiana is the only state dumb enough to recommend it and many parishes take the CYA approach of 'state recommended == we adopt it' bull. Spoke with senators and confirmed that it was blindly stamped and approved and no one associated with BESE or the chair cares enough to actually do anything about it.

There's a lot of people out there that have no understanding of math. As a CPA, it's exactly the way I think about number. The way our kids were taught before was not working. Just because you can't understand it doesn't mean it's wrong.

You couldn't read in first grade?

One, the people making the decisions don’t listen to the people actually doing the work.

Two, the decision makers aren’t happy until they completely (uselessly) overhaul the curriculum every few years.

They have to keep positions open for incompetents by making all these changes.

They’ve overcomplicated learning for these kids. Studying & doing homework each night with my 3rd grader has made me realize that.

Yep. 5+7=12. That should be easy. Instead they want them to find a 10 or another five first and create extra steps.

How pathetic is public education in Louisiana that we had to copy Mississippi?

Congrats, I guess.

How'd you get her interested. I have a PK4 kid that loves the idea of reading and plays around with the sight words; but doesn't seem to want to put the two thoughts together and actually work on reading. At least not at home, teachers say she's doing great, but I don't know what metric they are comparing her to.

the main issues with our system is its too expensive. Look at what we spend per pupil in this country.

If they focused on teaching kids to read instead of explore their genders and intersectionality, maybe Johnny could read and keep a job.
