They need to all be voted out. They do nothing but raise taxes on us.

TOPS is a great program, but if you drop out for reasons other than health/family emergency, you should be required to pay it back.

My freshman year there were at least 3 people that I know of in my dorm who only went for "football tickets and women" and dropped out after year one.

At least they are able to check off, “Some College” on all their job apps. That’s a “Win” for LA.

The compromise not only fully funded TOPS and health care, but it fully funded Film Tax credits, our bloated nursing home industry, hometown pork and all the special interests too.

Tops should go away alone with 100s of millions of government overhead.

Should, but will not. It will be used for pet projects and skimmed off. "We need more taxes" will, once again, be the battle cry.

We should probably pass a constitutional amendment to protect TOPS funding.

Tops isn’t an entitlement program, you have to work hard for it. At least a 2.0 gpa and a 12 on the act

It should never have become a needs based scholarship. The point of TOPS was to reward merit.

When did TOPS become need-based?

AND... they found a "surplus" to pay off 42 million (nice start to a new bridge) in lawsuits against DOTD. How many of those legislators are ambulance chasing attorneys? Vote for a Republican first, but never vote for a lawyer.

I share your disdain for ambulance chasers, but I’ve never understood this line of thought when it comes to legislators. They are writing laws.. seems an understanding of the law would be a good starting point.

Think that’s what got us into our mess.

I’m gonna be straight up. TOPS is horrible. I know for a fact there’s more kids that squander it and use it as a free ticket to party at LSU or wherever. You can guess which type of kids do this.. they don’t have to pay it back either. It’s just FREE money from the state of LA. This is a major reason why we’re in debt so bad.

And it allows daddy to buy them the nice car/truck and a condo instead of college.

Yea, I missed that, too.

I know there was some talk of that, when it may not have been fully funded in the past, but I don't think anything ever actually changed with how it's given out.

They need to increase the requirements for it.

think of it as a reward to the middle class for paying for everything else

TOPS should be a 3 year scholarship at best. It should only be awarded after completion of your freshman year with a 3.0 GPA. Young students need to have skin in the game either through mom and dad's money or a student loan. It should also be nested into a comprehensive education/training strategy for the state that involves trade schools and industry apprenticeships. Currently there is no incentive to not just give college a try.

Only news I would be happy to hear come out of the legislature would be if they consolidated the far too many public universities. All this state does is tax.

If you use TOPS, you should have to stay in LA after you graduate for at least 2 years
