Maybe it's the weather. I lived in NJ and before that, A little bit in StLouis and In 20 years I could count on one hand the number of times that I got sick with the flu or a cold. Since moving back 7 years ago I get both regularly every Nov/ Dec and sometimes summer colds. Never got Covid, though.

New Orleans is so isolated, I get why most of Louisiana do the same trips over and over.
This ain't 1850.
By car at 65mph...
5 hrs from the 4th largest city in America
4 hrs from some of the most beautiful beaches in America
7 hrs from the Ozarks.

Couldn’t find a job in Louisiana is probably #1

ETA: misread the subject, LA public school educated.
It may be dyslexia. I have done that a few times. I read something and did the opposite thinking I was doing it right.

To add another obvious reason, landscape. I simply love driving around in real hills, doesn't matter what for. Kids to school and practice, whatever. Looking out my window right now is scenic. After 8 years in middle TN I still enjoy it.
New one: being in a place that others want to be in and moved to on purpose. People in LA spend a lot of their time bitching about being there.

I moved from NW La to the Hamptons when I was 18 because I wanted something completely different than Louisiana. You can find a wider variety of culture from neighborhood to neighborhood in NY than you find from driving 4 hours on I-49 across Louisiana.
If I lived anywhere based on this, it would be central North Carolina. A couple hours from mountains, a couple hours from beaches, short road trips to major US cities to the north and south.

One more random one, the bourbon selection is better and a little cheaper (Nashville area). Not as good as Lexington probably, but I noticed.
And one that matches mine about landscape, day trip or even half day hikes. So easy here. I used to hike enjoyable trails maybe once a year because there are no rocks in LA, but I have dozens of options within an hour and a half.
And someone else said roaches... Haven't had a single one of those in our house here. I'm sure older ones close to water get them, but I'm happy to never dream with them.

I agree with you on the inability to drive anywhere worth a damn from Louisiana.
Im now a couple hours from Maine, one from those island, 2 1/2-3 from Vermont, 4 from Manhattan. Hell I can be in Canada in less than 6.
6 hours from Baton Rouge leaves few options.

1. no Ride Share in my small LA town but lots of cops eager to get you on DWI when your tire barely touches the white line.
2. no decent selection of restaurants.

Being within 4 hours of some of the prettiest beaches in the US is pretty damn nice I'd say.
I currently live in MN and I never really thought of NOLA as isolated. I feel much more isolated up here.
Outside of a few areas in the US, I would say most places are pretty isolated based on your description.

That really describes DFW.
Having an airline hub is nice though

Houston is the same. Galveston blows and the rest of the texas coast is only slightly better until way south
big bend is 9 hour drive.
family and work keeps me here. I am pretty over the summers

Cons: Taxes, sick of the uneducated voters, (although Kentucky isn't different), crime, shite bag politicians, hurricanes, no seasons, skanky women, weenies who weren't born and raised in NOLA, absolutely love the Democrats running the city, did I mention smelly liberals on Magazine St? Flooding after a thunderstorm. Seems to me many folks are content with the BS and refuse to make life changes
Pros: fishing, food, and family is important. There are some wonderful folks.

I left for opportunity. Traveled the entire country for work.
Realized Louisiana is the best place on earth. It has a soul to it that is unmatched anywhere else. Moved my family here, got 2 jobs offers out of state but my wife (from Georgia) refuses to leave Louisiana.
