The hate is justifiable in many respects (though I do not agree with it):
traffic
hot and muggy weather
tons of crime
shitty public schools
corrupt government
no mountains
no real beaches
"trashy" people
flooding
"backwards" attitudes
terrible roads
People often have a tendency to hate the place in which they grew up when they are young. They crave adventure and a taste of something different. I mean, if all they know is their parents' house in Shenandoah, Baton Rouge THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING BETTER OUT THERE!
As adolescents age into adults and mature, they begin to appreciate what Louisiana does have:
Great hunting and fishing
Some of the best food in the world
family
a sense of community
night life
constant festivals and benefits
and the unique rugged beauty of the Louisiana outdoors.
I find the people that hate Louisiana the most are either those that grew up in the suburbs of BR playing X-Box and bitching about how boring Baton Rouge is and how there's nothing to do, never going out or participating in anything, very liberal kids who grew up in strict evangelical households (especially in North Louisiana), and kids from Jefferson Parish who move to BR for school who are too scared to go to New Orleans and too busy bitching about how boring Baton Rouge is to leave the X-Box in their dorm room behind to explore it.

i'm a texan who loves Louisiana dearly.
I don't know if i'd move there, but i love the people and culture everytime i'm there.
Probably a top 5 state.

I love a lot about LA. I love the fishing for one. The quality of fishing there is amazing. I'd pick Cocodrie over many places in South Florida if it was purely about the quality of fishing. But I hope to retire to the Keys. It's just nicer there. HOwerver the Keys look beautiful, whereas the major fishing areas of South LA look so trashy. Sunken trawl boats, everything looks like it was destroyed by the last hurricane (as I'm sure it was), etc.. Yet the Keys get slammed by hurricanes as well, but they can clean up and keep it as a tourist destination. LA has a lot of great things, but also has a lot of stupid citizens and shitty governments that can't keep it nice.

People in Louisiana (particularly South Louisiana) party harder then almost anyone. New Orleans, Lafayette, and to a lesser extent Baton Rouge all have thriving night life. New Orleans has one of the best music scenes for a city its size in the world and a bar on virtually every major street corner. Lafayette gets tons of music acts as well as has thriving clubs downtown (if you don't mind Affliction Shirts).
Baton Rouge has come a long way over the last 5-10 years and has really improved its offerings as far as night life. Places like Barcadia, The Cove, Radio Bar, the Bulldog, ect provide relaxed places to chill and drink with friends. Chelsea's, Spanish Moon, the Texas Club, The Roux House, and the Varsity bring in live music acts. Where Baton Rouge is lacking is in good "club" type places. The Texas Club is great if you're a trashy LP type. Reggies is great for the under 21 crowd, Bogies for the over 21 college crowd. Downtown offers a lot of options (and they're getting better), but they're not quite there yet as the bars are still prone to being randomly dead on what should be peak nights. I think the large mass of people moving downtown to fill all of these new residential developments will really change that for the better.
Every small town in South Louisiana has lots of dive bars, honky-tonks, and parties (even if they are in someone's pasture). As long as you're friendly and not afraid to step out of your comfort zone (i.e. get squeamish around "trashy" people) you can have a blast in any South Louisiana town. North Louisiana is a different story.

NOLA is one of the best places to live on this planet.
I would shoot myself in the face if I had to live in Anytown, USA, ie 99.999% of the rest of the country. Houston, Dallas, ATL, KC, Philly, Cincy, Charlotte etc, all suck a fat d*ck. Granted, most people probably like those type of places...most people also suck at life and eat at Chili's. My 0.02.

Maybe if you're in your 20's/early 30's, single with no kids...otherwise no.

I'm not going to rep Louisiana like it's the best, but we have a lot of interesting people here. We have a lot of fun here. We have a lot of locally owned companies.
You go somewhere like Houston that has better infrastructure and schools, but everyone is a copy of the next person. There's no originality. The majority of businesses are franchises or corporations. You can't gamble.
It's all a matter of opinion really.

So if you don't live in New Orleans or think it's the best city in the country, you're automatically someone who resembles the stereotypical Chili's customer?
I like New Orleans and all, but you sound like an idiot.

quote:So stupid. The private catholic school here is called Father Rehab. When you live in Williamson County, the troubled kids go to private schools. That is how much of the North is as well
however I don't think I would send my child to a public school in any state.

I also love the fishing here, but it's just so ugly compared to other places.
I guess that's why God invented blue water and tuna.

I have lived in many States since high school. Louisiana is by far the best State in the Country when it comes to culture, food, music, people, vibe, etc...Of course there are a lot of negatives as well but the positives far exceed the negatives. I rep La like I own the bitch.

Food for thought, there are no Chili's in New Orleans.

I've lived in 5 states and none offer near the amount of festivals as Louisiana.
I'll also add just general excuses to get together and party/hang out w/ friends and/or family....crawfish boils, fishfry's, barbecue's, etc. Maybe it's our circle of friends here, but we hear about these activities going on way more than any place we lived (Texas, NC, Florida, Kansas, Bama)
What is hate about La. is the roads and absolutely the worst drivers than any state I've been to.
People gripe about the education here, but that's a bs excuse. Education begins and ends in the home.
