It's not even on par with the midwest

I only like Cenla and NOLA.

BR, SWLA, and N LA suck pretty hard.

NOLA sucks. Hell if was from there I'd want to get out of Louisiana too.

What's that work out to per year? My fiancé is graduating nursing school soon and from the looks of it, starting salary will be around 55-60K.

Eta: I worked the numbers and it looks like that works out to about 56k assuming a 40hr work week. That seems right on par with LA.

Yeah but the issue with LA is that the nursing salary stays pretty stagnant. You don't make that much more with years of experience compared to other states. Here is a map I found with 2012 mean annual RN salaries

Call me crazy, but that map seems to coincide pretty closely with the cost of living.

Yeah but a new grad in AZ could start off making 55-60k their first year and easily make 80-90k after a few years experience.

A LA new grad making that same 55k her first year (based off what you said your fiancee said) will make maybe up to 60-65 k tops.

Right, but what I'm saying is don't you think cost of living has a lot to do with this? I could choose any profession and the median salary on the west coast would likely be higher than the median salary in the south.

Cost of living where I live at isn't insanely high though. It's higher than other areas of PHX. But it's not like living in say San Francisco or NYC or Seattle.

An RN can easily make 90k a year here in PHX and can buy a 3 bedroom/2 bath 1800-2000 sq foot house for 200-250k (300k if they want to live in Scottsdale). Can rent a one bedroom apt for 600-1000(depending on area).

That sounds like a nice area to live. Sounds like you may have found a place that is an exception to the general rule.

Nurse, you need to ask what you can do for your community vs. the other way around.

I care for the poor kids of this city Reb

UptoPar.....you see a lot of people from CA move here....cost of living cheaper but they can still have similar climate and be close to their home state.

I'm not going to deny any of your claims, but I've never seen someone get all worked up over how good the roads are in their state either. The government certainly has its issues, but the difference between the best state government and LA isn't exactly noticeable in your daily life IMO.

Also, I'm not quite sure why/how the overall health and obesity levels of a state really matter in this conversation. I've lived in San Francisco, universally considered one of the healthier cities in the US, and I never thought "damn, aren't all of these healthy people great!" Just because you're surrounded by fatties doesn't mean you have to join them.

Look, most states have their pros and cons, and Louisiana appeals to many people for many reasons. It also turns off many people. I don't take offense to the people that dislike LA for whatever reasons, but I'd be interested to know what state(s) you find more attractive and for what reasons. It is easy to criticize any state on its own, but when compared to other places things usually aren't so black and white.

. Of course, but despite that, LA manages to be last or second to last in almost all shitty categories.

Do you ever look at who does the polling? Example is a poll of the worst states for grammar conducted by looking for grammatical errors on Twitter. Twitter?
I've been to every state and have seen a few things and our roads are just as good or bad as all the others. With exceptions of course but considering the amount of roads in watery areas we're fine. Education is bad, but is bad in a lot of places. It is worse in areas of lower income ethnic neighborhoods. We have a bunch of those.

As a born and bred Yankee, I can honestly say that I'm glad I moved to Louisiana. I like it here. Can't stand LSU though.

Born, raised and spent the majority of my life in Louisiana having lived in NO, BTR, Lafayette, Houma, Morgan City and Slidell. I love Louisiana and it's people.

I left twenty (20) years ago for better opportunities in Texas. Those opportunities afforded other opportunities and I've only been back to visit Louisiana. I will not trash Louisiana given it is my birth state and I am proud to be a LSU Tiger.

Like many who post in threads on this topic, I can confirm that the educational, professional and career opportunities are simply more abundant in other places such as Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, etc. That doesn't necessarily make Louisiana a bad place as long as you (as an individual) are aware of the general difference in opportunities and are comfortable with your decision to remain in Louisiana.

The issue of having "trashy" places is not unique to Louisiana. I have traveled the US and can tell you that every state has them.

NOLA was populated by criminals and prostitutes by the French government. What could possibly go wrong in a state with that kind of population?
