The running boom we're going through has been nice in some regards, but man it's attracted some absolute losers to the sport too.

When race production became a profitable business in the recent boom, then those race production companies started buying up the local races, the marketing shifted to promote these endurance events to anyone..."even you can do this". Hell, Ironman's slogan is "Anything is possible." - THE frick IT IS. I get the sentiment but there are far too many people registering for these races that don't take it seriously and it's more about "bragging rights" when theyre finished than the actual process and competition.

The YMCA even bought our local 4 mile race on July 4th and the registration fee is almost triple what it was just a few years ago so fat Nancy can walk her hippo arse 4 miles in a tutu.

I am not a good runner in the warmer weather.

Me neither. I mainly run 5Ks. My best time ever was set during a freezing drizzle where I was wearing shorts and a tank top.

My body heats up really fast when I'm running.

The body just isn’t made for marathons frankly .

The body is made for what you make it for.

It isn't made for swimming or climbing or bedrotting away all day either but the human body gets extraordinarily proficient at them.

Go look at the runDisney Facebook page. It's gotten absolutely out of hand. Fat women dressed like household furniture, guys dressed up in full Cinderella attire. Disney gives them all finisher medals, regardless of whether or not they get swept in mile 1. You should see the complaints regarding pace.

Disney allows a 16 min/mile pace!

They think it should be higher which is absurd. 16 min/mile is damn near walking.

Trust me, 18 miles is NOT a marathon. The absolute hardest part of a marathon are those last few miles. At mile 18, runners aren’t even near their breaking point. Usually hits around mile 22 or so, knowing you still have 4 miles or so to go. Test of mental strength and physical strength.

I’ve done 3 and I agree. Mile 20 is about the cutoff when it goes from “this isn’t so bad” to “oh my god this hurts”

It's a way to promote the sport and encourage entrants at $200-$300+ registration fees. If I pay over $300 and run 18 miles, I definitely want a $12 medal

We're seeing it with the NYC Marathon this week. The cutoff was something like 23 minutes faster than the advertised qualifier time. You had to run a 2:30 (5:42/mi) to get in on time qualifying because the majority of the race spots are given to tour operators, charity runners, influencers, and people who shelled out money to run enough NY Road Runners races to guarantee automatic entry. It's less about runners who want to go fast and more about how much money they can squeeze out

In defense of that race, they have always been way more about the inclusivity of it than others like Boston which is mostly about the qualifiers. 23 minute buffer is really crazy though.

Imagine running around the track around a football field 105 times. Then imagine if, after 74 laps, someone told you you could be done if you want instead of doing the next 26 laps.

Its obvious youde quit early.

Now imagine being at a party with 6 hot girls around you listening to your stroy of how you ran a marathon, and one of your baws says "you pussy, quit lying, you quit early"....as the entire group bursts into laughter
